Like the amount of fun I had in India, Nigeria, Ghana, United Kingdom, cannot even compare to the downsize in fun you will experience in Switzerland. I regularly escape to London for the weekend to actually party properly.
You only have to go through the thread to realise the problems some EFs face until you learn the language and all the stuff. Just go through the threads on blending properly into the Swiss society.

i agree. and i'm actually having a blast here in haiti. thriving social life. good stable job. a good place in the society. travel, mainly in this part of the world. nice beaches etc. but...

BUT, and this is what makes me happy here in Switzerland, if you want a certain degree of order, and you want to start a family, you will find Switzerland brilliant. Transport is always on time, the country is usually clean (depending on where you live obviously) but in general well kept. I'd say crime rates are low, and if you are outdoorsy person, then you will be in heaven. OH, did i mention the salary and low taxes - which I have to admit is probably the biggest thing keeping me here

...i suddenly realized that i can't live the life of the party forever. i don't want to raise my children here. i want to start thinking of settling down.

I have a similar profile to you, currently involved in finance (9-5) but heavily involved in the creative and entertainment business on the side. Funny enough a few of creatives I have met here usually ask the same question, "why leave London for Switzerland?"
That is just my take really. Goodluck with your decision

may i ask, what creative thing do you do? i'm fine with doing boring layout and stuff like that. i usually do my creative design outside work.

Compare Wettingen to Guilford. (And Wettingen is actually only one third of the size of Guilford...) Where do you have more fun?

Hahah, I actually like Wettingen. But to be honest, I only sleep there. I am usually in Zurich especially over the weekend. That is where I get my fun. Which again is not as much as the fun you would get in Shoreditch but still for what it is, it makes do especially for creatives.
Wettingen is definitely boring but it works to wind down on Sunday and for working. And it has great outdoors. You can find me on the riverside on Sundays staring at the river for ages

sounds nice! outdoors are always nice places to unwind, especially after spending the whole week inside the office.

but my question is (especially to those who lived there for a long time) is life there worth the difficulty to get into switzerland?
or should i look in other places in europe?

i'm head graphic designer of a marketing communications agency.
i just want to live where it's safe, organized and close to nature. i'm single 26 years old.

please share your thoughts, experiences and daily life. i'm aching for a new country and i'm very ready for change. i'm currently in haiti.

If you live in Haiti right now I think you would be in shock when you come here. I know Haiti isnt as safe as 90% of any other place in the world, so any place you go will likely be a step up in that respect. But Switzerland is like stepping into scalding hot water for most people coming from the Western Hemisphere.

Ive lived in several places here in Europe and I would probably be more inclined to tell you to start in France, or even Spain. Spain has a very high quality of living, MUCH better climate, friendlier people (like what youre used to in Haiti), and cheaper everything (you can rent an 8 bedroom 500m from the beach for Euro1,300 per month).

Switzerland is a great place. But if you enjoy nice weather, people waiting an extra half second to open the door for you, and a cheap quick meal every now and then, you will resent this place unless you have an income that allows you to live very comfortably.

Re: why live in switzerland?

Reading the forum i have almost the same question - we have decided to move to Switzerland. My husband has got a job and i must say that it is good for him. However i am working and i dont see myself being able to manage the job and the kid and the house with the kind of system that exists. read somewhere that in apartments you get 1/2 day fixed for laundry?? What if it happens to be on weekday? how do you do the laundry and still attend office? and the school timings look crazy to me and the daycares prohibitively expensive not to mention the availability. I dont want to start off on a negative note but am deeply concerned. I have been a tailing spouse all through but wherever we have moved i have had no difficulty in finding & managing a job. Switzerland looks difficult to me though - hope i am wrong!

I cook better than most, so food is not a problem in any country for me. And I like Swiss beer, but prefer English or Belgian (not a fan of German beer).

It depends, I have one day, always did it after work (could get three loads done, wash and dried, by the 10PM stop-time, always could do another in the morning if need be), as wash day is 5PM-5PM in our case.

you'll definetly not like it here.

reason : too many greedy foreigners coming here and staying only for the money while enduring a dry and cold society.

YMMV

Well, i live in a House with no fixed Laundry dates (even in the evening or on sundays you can do your laundry), can flush my toilet when I want(even at 3 am ), but that doesn't make my live a good one.
With the money I get for my job , I can finish private projects, visit concerts(all over europe), have fun there with the fans of the bands I like most , travel the world.....
That's important to me, the lifestyle of the rich and famous here in zurich does not count at all for me.
I do not own a car, have a small flat, work or travel most of the time, otherwise
enjoy my freedom to do "crazy" things for a 43 year old(visit punk or rock concerts , enjoying the first row, build computers, cycle around the lake....)
The money I earn here in switzerland is more then 3 times that amount i earned on my last job in germany.
" Real" Friends are hard to find(not that kind at the social media), I like people with the same kind of Interests (music, travel, bicycles, concerts).
If you don't care , make your step into heavy paid switzerland

i find it odd that there are many expats here in the forum who are staying in switzerland and continue to do so, but they don't seem to like the country... but they stay!

very odd thing. maybe i should continue stalking the forum some more!

WellSwitzerland, can offer you a lot : good job opportunities, medical care, publictransport and so on. It's just different however what makes you happy. I felt very enthusiastic when I first moved here. Almost 2 years later not somuch, I guess it's normal.
Good luck

I don't want to scare you of, but the first thing you might see in the airport is this poster:
http://www.immigration-massive.ch/

seriously, Switzerland is great and all, have all the great "hard-factors", like clean, tidy, everything works etc...I just love it...

...but it's not so good on the "soft-things"...empathy, understanding, patience , e.g. they take honesty way too far i.e. tell what they think about you in your face etc., not that Switzerland is worse than the average european country, but from a non-european (especially if you're from mid or south-america) you will miss the "warmness" from people...

I always say, when you start complaining about a place then you have settled down...I can mention twice as many flaws from back home...but the forum is a place for people to ventilate...since it's tough for a foreigners to do it at e.g. work.

Swiss don't like to be criticized, especially not from foreigners...they really don't!...
