My driving license is from the US admittedly but it states I am a US temp visitor and has photo, height, eye color, DOB ... just not nationality.

But to be honest it didn't occur to me I would need my passport. MY driving license has been enough in 3 hotels in London was enough last year in Zurich at the Hyatt.....

prof. taratonga - yes it will be very amusing when hubby gets here... esp since they also messed up the room request !!
That explains it! The US makes our life miserable.Pay back time

As I said in my OP our Passports is are at home.... in the safe at home in Switzerland...... I came to Zurich on the train just for a night out and we decided to stay in the hotel so we didn't have to get a taxi back at whatever time it will be in the early morning. I don't have an id card as I am not swiss and have just taken to using my DL as ID. It simply didn't occur to me to bring my passport for a night out as this is something we did a lot in the UK when we went to London for a late night....... it simply didn't occur to me that it would be needed....
Ah. Well, your location says you live in NY. I figured you were coming from there. I hate when my psychic powers don't work properly! LOL.

Hopefully you'll work it out. Good luck! But, for next time, you should have your permit with you and that will work much better than your US DL.

ETA: Hmmm, maybe I UK DL would work as the UK doesn't have ID cards??

With a US drivers license as ID?

No wonder they didn't accept it!

Yes, for all hotels, anywhere, Europe, Asia, US, Aussie, a law you need to show a passport or a Permit or Visa or driving license. In France, always a passport.

What is the permit ?? I need to look into Swiss requirements as we are moving here next year..... is a permit like a resident visa ?? I did ask hubby's family if I need to do anything before I come here to live and they said no.... maybe tell the local police lol... am not trusting them for any info in future !!!

am STILL waiting for hubby but receptionist said I could just give her my passport number if hubby doesn't have swiss ID card with him.... not sure how some numbers is better than my U.S. DL esp as she has no idea if I am making it up..... which I will prob do to be honest... I have no idea what my number is off the top of my head

My UK DL has my uk address from 7 years ago as the DVLA won't accept overseas address so I just use the US DL as that at least is the address I currently live at and where credit cards go to etc....

Well I learnt a lesson today and will have a scanned copy of my passport on my computer in future....

in the UK they will accept a credit card. I only got a DL at 30 and used to stay in hotels all the time for work. only ever showed credit card and last weekend in 2 hotels in London only showed credit card.

I'm getting confused. Your passport is "at home in Switzerland", but you have no resident's permit (in fact don't even know what one is) and so you don't live here?!?

As a tourist in any foreign country you should carry your passport and expect to be asked for it when checking in to any hotel. This stops you doing a runner.

In Switzerland tourist are registered with the police by the hotel and and tax (Kurtax) of a few % is charged on all overnight stays. It's included in the hotel's rates...

My husband is Swiss, we have a home here ( despite me never living here I visit a lot ) he had it before we met. we met in London and married whilst there. moved to Hong Kong and then Singapore now New York. We come to CH about 4 times a year but I have never lived here. The House is still considered home and currently holds my passport in its safe

So, legally, you are a tourist.

Tourists MUST carry their passport at all times!

You will need a residence permit. I'm not sure if there is a formal difference between a permit and a visa; I think of a permit as being a longer term item.

My process was to get an entry visa (good for 6 months) pasted into my US passport at my local Swiss consulate, and then to register with the town hall when I arrived. That first bit had to be done outside of Switzerland. A few weeks after arrival, my permit arrived in the mail. It looks (and seems to work) just like you'd expect a id card to. My immigration was employer sponsored though, so there might be some differences.

I expect that you'll need to show your marriage certificate, provide a Swiss standard passport photo and so on. I'd email the Swiss consulate in NY, or wherever you live, 6 months in advance of your move, just to be careful. In my experience, Swiss bureaucracy works fine if you start early and ask nicely what is required.

Ah, here we go...
The relevant Swiss embassy webpage seems to be here and the "Family regroupment" visa requirements on the right seem to be telling. Good luck!

I typically use my B permit...you're supposed to have your permit on you at all times in Switzerland anyway.
No you're not - at least if you're resident here. But if you don't have it, it can cause difficulties.

All the hotels I've checked into in Switzerland have happily accepted my residency permit in lieu of passport.

I just checked into the Sheraton in Zurich for a night out with hubby and I was told by the receptionist I needed a passport to be able to check in any hotel in Switzerland. I have left my husband to argue with her when he arrives as I know he only has his swiss driving license with him too. Our passports are in our home as it didn't occur to me I would need more than a photo id ( which she wouldn't accept) is she just being a frosty pants or should I of brought our passports ?? in case it makes a difference he is Swiss and I am from the UK...

and should I not bother to unpack
I visited a hotel in Geneva which required a passport even though we were registered through our company, i.e. not tourist...so yes some hotel may require passports...

Ultimately, you need a valid ID:

a) Passport

b) Residency Permit

c) SWISS drivers license (foreign don't count, except perhaps EU)

d) ID card (Swiss or other)
