and should I not bother to unpack  | | | | | Yeah, driver's licenses aren't considered official ids the same way that they are in the states. When you travel around, you're supposed to have either the official Swiss ID (national identity card) or your passport. But, I recently found myself only with an American driver's license in Italy (husband left our passports at home!) and the hotel owner didn't seem to care at all. But I did have a scanned copy of my passport on my PC with me.

LOL. The only thing you ever need for a dirty weekend at a swank hotel are ID, credit card & toothbrush.

ok so after all the earlier stress... hubby arrived at 6.30 pm, said ' I need a key for room *** and I hear there was problem earlier when my wife arrived...' they replied with ' no we don't think so. Here is your key have a good evening'
So no one has any ID details from either of us... apart from the credit card we paid with. No one took my DL details because they weren't relevant.....

My process was to get an entry visa (good for 6 months) pasted into my US passport at my local Swiss consulate, and then to register with the town hall when I arrived. My immigration was employer sponsored though, so there might be some differences.
I expect that you'll need to show your marriage certificate, provide a Swiss standard passport photo and so on. I'd email the Swiss consulate in NY, or wherever you live, 6 months in advance of your move, just to be careful. In my experience, Swiss bureaucracy works fine if you start early and ask nicely what is required.

As you are married to a Swiss and are an EU citizen (a Brit cuts no more ice than EU), things will be straightforward, but you will still need an Ausweiss B to start and then after 5 years a C and apply for Swiss citizenship if you are serious about staying...

to be honest I didn't read it ll as it appeared to apply to US citizens....
I was thinking about applying for the Swiss passport but not sure there will be a real advantage..... I'll think further. We have already been married 6 years so I could of applied as we live outside CH...... I'll think about it when I have learnt some german to be able to answer the questions.....
I have more that enough other things to think about at the moment.... where to live, building a new home, buying a place in London..... swiss passport is very low down on my list....

I know my friends joke that I have been on holiday for 8 years....and I have several 'addresses' and have lived in 4 countries in 6 year.... but my mail address is currently the US... so wherever I lay my hat and all that... .. am looking forward to explaining the last 8 years addresses and my lack of employment to the local authorities here ... not !!!

I'm just trying to figure how far we could hear the laughter if I used my Swiss driver's license as a photo ID anywhere in the USA. But then, since it is one of the old, folding, kind, it causes laughing fits even when I have to use it just as what it is, namely a driver's license. It's that "Hey Chuck, come here, this is something you must see" kind of thing.
