I do beg to differ.. come on.. I get really peeved when a job desc. is published in the UK for a IT position in Switzerland and I get contacted by headhunters in the UK.... and the job is nowhere to be found here, on any job search engine.
Not true, lots of professionals fit the bill here, but communication is deplorable.
I am not sure if this is about lousy communication, only. Connections. There are jobs, but there are also certain filters that prevent open disclosure of options. It's not the fault of foreign headhunters, I have a feeling they are paying a lot to have priority to info on job openings. So, somebody is either selling this info, or, there might be certain myths on the potential of local employees, unfortunately.

London (and the rest of the country) is going to hell. In the North where we lived, we were both working, but yet couldn't afford to live in a safe area and have a car. [...]

But I think the most important reason is quality of life. In England, quality of life is mediocre at best and it is getting worse very quickly. It's so much better here.
I'm just curious why rich people move to London then? Is it that with money you can buy there a high quality of life or something else?

Simples - I work to live, not live to work.

Quality of life here is very good. Quality of life I had/could have in Paris or London is not as good. What's so hard to understand? We're not all career maniacs!
What was so bad in Paris if I may ask?

I am starting to wonder about your questions, really...

Yes.

But what constitutes a high quality of life for a tasteless billionaire who chucks his money away on designer clothes, diamonds and being seen at the opera might not necessarily constitute a high quality of life for anybody else.

Go and have a look in an atlas.

I'm just curious why there are so many Americans moving to Switzerland? What could an American possibly want there? The best job market in the world is in the US. Who'd want to go to a place where it takes years to find a job? Why abandon everything and go across the Atlantic?

The same question to the British. I'm under impression there are more of those than of the native locals in Switzerland. From what I heard the London is a great place to work as well. Why move so far away and again to hunt a job for years?

(I know we're on English forum but that's not the only source of my impression)
I guess this has already been answered but honestly, as a potential American expat in CH, I find the very question bizarre: It's almost impossible to emigrate here unless you have a job already, and if you're asking why is there a better job here than at home, well, surely you can figure that out for yourself when our respective unemployment rates diverge by double digits?

As to the "London is a great place", sure - so is Paris, NYC, SF (where I'm from), and about a dozen other great cities. But I'd have thought that, at least for those lucky enough to have a CHOICE, living in CH is an utterly different prospect in every conceivable way. Not better for everyone, but just completely non-comparable.

OK, don't mean to be rude, but I've gone on too long on a thread I can't even understand the need for.

If you have a point why don't you make it directly?

If it was thin English humor it was apparently too thin for me to notice. Requires some more substance to outside ears.

Eh..

Ok. First of all, go check out the rules in stickies. This subforum is meant for things related to CH. Questions about why people want to live in UK or FR are not relevant not only to your thread, but to this specific subforum.

People are being very nice in answering what seem bizarre questions, that have nothing to do with our life in here. Where to live is a question of personal preference, so getting snarky when people point that out will not solicit genuine answers and it brings the helpful atmosphere down, too.

If you want to knock down people who either decide to move over to CH, or who were obligated to move here, yes, there are plenty, this wouldn't be a place for it. In fact, nowhere here. There are webs on mobility of world population to help you with answers.

So, either post questions that are relevant, or I will close this circus thread.

Because if they're rich they don't have to worry about money? If you're not rich, then it's very hard to live (especially in London) considering the prices are about 75% of Zurich but the wages are about 50%.

I think you'll find that rich people move to London because that's the trend. It's not a particularly nice city unless you're in the very poshest parts, which only the rich can afford to live/shop in.

I have a point. If you are too thick to get it, that isn't really my problem, is it?
