Do I need a visa to look for housing?!

Very serious question: I've been told by corporate HR who confirmed w/ CH authorities that as an American I get precisely one visit, of 8 days' max, while entering CH on business.

If I'm going to relocate, I have a 'gap', in that I will absolutely have to come back to do housing searches, which will inevitably occur before my visa is processed.

So, my question is, what do tell those friendly folks at the border, and am I likely to run into trouble? What can/should I do to make my trips legitimately and demonstrably non-business? Etc.

Looking for housing isn't "business". Just come here on a tourist Visa. Go for a dozen pints at the Odeon to make it legit.

I like how you think

I should probably know this, or at least be able to find it, but I'm still sweating off last night's dozen or so pints, to I'll ask anyway - do you need to apply or otherwise process a tourist visa in advance, or do you just show up at customs and say as much?

Sorry....it's a bit early for me too: truth is, US Citizens don't need a Visa at all to travel to Switzerland. You can stay for up to 90 days. Make sure you have at least 6 months left on your US passport and you're good to go.
