Re: better to live in the Paris or Geneva area ?

A Pariser? LOL (aka as a French Letter - or capote anglaise) funny how each nation 'throws the blame' on the other, hey?

In rural France, they stare. In rural Italy, they stare, etc, etc.

Isn't this the Forum where so many are complaining about the cosntant staring??
It's because Swiss stare at your face and Parisians stare at your bum.

I must correct previous post: Paris is not the capital of sex, it's the capital of quick sex. For the real thing, I recommend Germany.

Paris = 35 hour work week. To me that's incentive.

If it's the same package, I would say Paris indeed.....Geneva is turning to be extremely unlivable now....that's my personal opinion.
I think Paris on every count, including crime and cleanliness of public places. Geneva is really going downhill in every sense

I should also add (and this may sound a bit odd) but in Paris, everybody is having sex. It is always on their minds.

Living in Paris i felt like a supermodel everyday. Strange men look, look again, smile, wink, whistle, offer to buy you coffee or drinks or dinner, tell you you look beautiful. Even being pregnant or pushing a pram doesn't deter a Parisian man. Heck, even the women eye you up!

The Swiss are much more reserved. When I go out jogging here no one looks at my bottom. Sometimes I think I must be invisible.
a photo would help here

Re: better to live in the Paris or Geneva area ?

Geneva, over Paris any day. Paris is beautiful but I wouldn't be able to handle the very long commutes, the high sense of competition, the stress level and the very long hours (35 h in Paris is just a myth)

Geneva is safer (though less than before), cleaner, pleasant and quite enjoyable.

Shayslou does have a point about the appreciation of the opposite gender, French gentlemen are more demonstrative in their appreciation, even if you're older. Not exactly unpleasant in my opinion, quite charming in fact, though far more refined and polite than the attention Shayslou has mentioned.. ah youth, il faut que la jeunesse se passe...

Re: better to live in the Paris or Geneva area ?

My GF has just moved to Geneva (from Vienna) and we cannot believe what an overrated dump Geneva is - sure, it has *some* nice bits but the price of almost anything (accomodation, eating out, taxis, shops generally, the list goes on..) are just ridiculous, the place is dirty, all the accomodation looks like 1960s crappy hi-rise building blocks that would have been torn down (or never built) elsewhere, the traffic around the city is a joke (and seems to be intentionally like that..), crime has increased to such an extent that most of the diplomatic community are complaining to the swiss authorities... etc. etc.

Most of these comments would probably also apply to Paris too (having lived there for 6 months) but at least Paris has all the things to do and see and that atmosphere ..

Having said all this, at least it's quicker to get out of Geneva than Paris, if outdoor activities are your thing.

Compared to the german speaking part of Switzerland, where i currently live, Geneva's another country..

Kevin

That's because we hire too many expats and pay them a bomb (only for them to come here and complain about the price of stuff afterwards). Plus if you think a taxi in Geneva is expensive, you should try one in Oslo.

You mean buildings built in the 60es look like... buildings of the 60es? Now THAT is a surprise.

Did they now. And here I was thinking they only circulated an internal warning note, like the hundreds they send around each year.

Ah yes, Bern, "the place that looks like a coma you never wake up from" (c) Marie-Thérčse Porchet.

Re: better to live in the Paris or Geneva area ?

I have lived in both, Paris 4 years, Geneva considerably more. Up until a few years ago I would have said Geneva, no question, and it has nothing to do with cost because central Paris aint cheap either.
However, as we have discussed in other threads, if you have arrived in Geneva in the last 3 years, you can be forgiven for wondering what all the fuss was about. It has seriously deteriorated in that time with no prospects of improving. In crime, lack of available housing and traffic are only 3 of the many problems.
Therefore my reply to the OP would be - a most definite neither .

Re: better to live in the Paris or Geneva area ?

Another vote against Paris. After 8 years in deepest Normandy (Carentan), we had to get out. The equation duck shooting = culture was no longer funny, so I spent two years looking at jobs in Paris. And we never found an offer that would give us the quality of life that living in the Geneva regoin gave, or gives, us. Proviso 1) That was with two young kids; Proviso 2) We don't live in Geneva.

That may be an insider question, but where do you intend to live in Paris ? There are many kinds of "Parises" within Paris...

Seems to a large extent apathy from the police who seem to be giving up. No attention to theft or burglaries, too much attention to parking infractions, public order pretty much totally ignored. just a few examples

I'm amazed by those guys who hang out at the church near the railway station. The first thing a visitor who arrives there sees is a bunch of drunks and druggies.

Agreed, it seems the police are happy to let those guys take over a neigbourhood and do nothing about it. The claim is that they have no papaers so they can only take them in and dump them across the border and they come straight back in.

Sooo it would seem the famous "gratuitous and unprovoked beating" of a US diplomat's son that has gotten everyone up in arms was actually a drug deal gone wrong... ahem.

Then again, it's the politicians - not the police - that make the rules. And they're no happier than you and I with the situation.

Live in Lausanne and commute to Geneva for work. Lausanne more vibrant than Geneva, and if you need a dose of Paris the TGV is 4 hours to Gare de Lyon.
