| | better to live in the Paris or Geneva area ?
to those among you that have experienced living both in Suisse Romande (the French-speaking part of Switz.) and France :
Assuming job opp. would be the same - that's the situation that I am in - where do you think one gets a better time ?
Regards
G.

Compared to Paris I think Geneva is a better choice for safety and less stress. Its more expensive for the small stuff but the rents will be about the same. But less rude people in Geneva, less vagrants, and a better place to raise a family imho.
But Paris has much more in terms of things to do on the weekend obviously. So I guess it depends on what your age bracket is. Thats probably how Mowvich and I differ?

Horse for courses, and all that. How can anybody advise without knowing anything about you? For me Geneva region anytime- and Paris from time to time for a few days.

I am going to make a guess although I haven't lived in either Paris OR Geneva. Assuming that the French language isn't an obstacle and you have a job that allows you to live in either place, I'm going to guess Paris. Paris is a bigger city and there are more things to see and do in Paris than in Geneva. There's a reason why it's a world tourist attraction and why Americans who don't speak a word of French save up money to travel to Paris.
But Paris isn't necessarily for everyone. I love visiting New York every year, but my opinion of that city might dramatically change if I had to live there every day. Geneva looks like a lovely city from pictures, and I can believe that some people who have been to both cities might prefer smaller Geneva to bigger Paris, just as there are Americans who would rather live in the Twin Cities than in New York.
That's just my two cents worth.

I loved living in Paris. I like living in Vaud.
Personally I find Paris more welcoming, more fun, more stylish, the architecture is much more pleasing on the eye, the food miles better, the service in shops and restaurants much much better, choice of shopping so much better.
I had many French friends in Paris and find the people very sociable. Meeting people at parties and making friends was not a problem. Last month I went back after 4 years and strolled through my arrondissement and my greengrocer and butcher still recognised me and greeted me like I was an old friend.
However Paris is noticeably dirtier than Geneva. The number of homeless people is quite astounding. The banlieue (suburbs) are no go areas. Parisians are worse drivers than the Swiss.
I don't live in Paris anymore but it still feels like home. I live in Vaud and it has never felt like home.

While I'm sure apartments in Paris are also expensive, hotels that charge $300 a night seem to be aimed more at well-heeled tourists who don't plan on staying long rather than people who plan on living in Paris for a year or two.

I should also add (and this may sound a bit odd) but in Paris, everybody is having sex. It is always on their minds.
Living in Paris i felt like a supermodel everyday. Strange men look, look again, smile, wink, whistle, offer to buy you coffee or drinks or dinner, tell you you look beautiful. Even being pregnant or pushing a pram doesn't deter a Parisian man. Heck, even the women eye you up!
The Swiss are much more reserved. When I go out jogging here no one looks at my bottom. Sometimes I think I must be invisible.

I'm living in Paris right now and if you want to live here I have few informations :
-Rentals in Paris are more expensive than in Switzerland (Zürich or Geneva)
-Salaries in Paris are cheapers than in Switzerland
Living in the centre of Paris is difficult, if you don't have too much money, you'll live in something very small or in the suburban zones (I live in one actually, it seems like a city in war).
I would recommend you Geneva. PAris is a beautiful city to visit, but to live, that's another story

Compared to Paris, Swiss men are less presumptuous, but they do stare quite a bit.
