Lost my SLR - Should I give up searching

I lost my brand new SLR on 20.08.2011 in Zürich
And I realized that I am not in possession of my bag anymore.
It was just 2 weeks old when I lost it and worst part - I haven't downloaded pictures from my holidays.
And now may be someone is busy click... click.. click... without any intention to return it back. Or may have already sold it and would have gulped my hard earned money. After spending few weeks in state of dilemma I had decided to move to SLR from my cyber shot to indulge into photography bit seriously. But I think it wasn't meant for me.

I know it was stupid of me to forget it somewhere. I have tried all means to find it (SBB lost and found, Zurich City lost and found) but wasn't lucky. Does anyone have any other suggestion where I should look for it or may be how I can search it? Or should I give up

Re: Lost my SLR - Should I give up searching

Seems a bit vague around when you actually lost it but you could check any restaurants/bars etc. that you might have visited...

Have you checked your home insurance and/or your credit card insurance (especially as it was so new)? You would need to make a police report in order to make a claim I would expect.

Good Luck

Broon.

Do you have a household insurance? It usually also covers some events outside, such as theft. You might at least be able to get your money back.

Did you make a note of its serial number?

It may be a bit late now but have you looked on ricardo? Or also maybe some other used camera websites.

Funny. When I read the title - I thought I would never stop looking if I lost an SLR (A Mercedes SLR that is). Not that I'll be rich enough to own one to lose one anytime soon.

I'm sorry about your camera.

Re: Lost my SLR - Should I give up searching

Good news if you have any photographs from the camera stored on your computer somewhere. If the person who took your camera uploaded any of their photos to flickr or 500px, 2 sites will be able to search images uploaded and let you know if there is a match. It does this by doing a search using the serial number. You just need to have a photo that you took with camera or the serial number.
Read the following article about how one photographer found $9k of his gear. The article also contains links to the sites that can track down the gear.

Unfortunately I dont have a single photo taken from the camera.. But I will look up for the serial number. It is definitely not on the invoice. The box contains some numbers with barcode but I am not sure which one is the serial number. I need to check it. Thank you for this useful information.

Yes I do have household insurance. I have to check with the insurance company whether loss of personal good outside it covered or not. The general terms and condition does mention it.
thank you

Re: Lost my SLR - Should I give up searching

If understand you correct. In case I have claim it from the insurance company I will have to make a police report.
Have never done that before. How easy or difficult is it to make a police report ?

Go to the police station and tell them you want to report a loss or possible theft. They do the rest; you just need to provide the details and dates.

Re: Lost my SLR - Should I give up searching

I have seen pictures from found cameras in Migros Magazine etc., in a bid to find the owner... keep an eye on that.

Tip for next time: make sure that the camera or its bag is marked with contact details, for example your e-mail address.

It's not a guarantee that you will get it back, but makes it easier for the finder. It could be that the item was found by good people who are willing to return it, but do not know how, or don't bother spending time on going to lost & found etc.

Friends of mine also lost their camera but got it back within a week, because the bag had an address label.

Re: Lost my SLR - Should I give up searching

Another small note.

On the latest generation of SLR's such as my EOS 7d, you can set your copyright and name data in the EXIF settings. If the person who found it doesn't know about this then all the pics he or she takes will have your email and copyright data on every image.

Just something to think about for the next camera.

Would call the insurance company first and check what they need. Also if you paid for the camera on a credit card I would check if they cover it (they would in the UK typically).....
