Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

An excellent reason why most blocks of flats do not allow own washing machines - and keep communal ones in the basement. So many here have poked fun at the washing machine hours and no flushing after 10pm - and yet... do get (quite rightly) fed up if the downpipe is next to their bedroom or washing machine above their head.

Those rules do seem really daft at first- but soon make sense when you 'suffer' the consequences of non-compliance. I'd try and speak to that neighbour, just explaining you have sleep problems and asking for cooperation - or put a nice card in the door- and hope for the best. If it does not work, formal complaint to the caretaker or letting agent.

Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

1) Dig out the house rules
2) Find paragraph on making noise and use of washing machines
3) Speak to neighbour asking politely to stop washing late at night
4) If 3) doesn't work - try again
5) If 4) doesn't work - report the landlord

In our house (not in Zurich) our washing machine is on a separate circuit which doesn't allow power between 12 and 2 - and after 10pm!!

My wife loads the dishwasher the night before - and has it start around 6am.

Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

THE APOCALYPE IS NIGH !!!!

Since when does everyone on the EF get all "SWISS" and gang up on on someone for making noise past 10pm?

Jesus.... every other thread on the EF is about NOT being able to do your washing etc.

What happened to the good 'ol solution -
"go and have a chat with your neighbour?"

Go and build some community spirit and talk to your neighbour...... save the urine filled super soaker for the "Billag" guy.

Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

What would you prefer if you were on the receiving end? You've only been here three weeks--it's a little early to begin citing the Hausordnung for a simple household annoyance. Or even to know that such a thing exists. Forget the fusebox and the passive-aggressive notes too--put on a friendly smile and just go talk to your neighbor to sort it out. This is human interaction 101, by the way.

If it's keeping someone up at night, it cannot be that hard to find the source of the noise.

Hey

One of my neighbours in this block of 6, including us, keeps putting the washing machine on late at night.

I'm not sure who it is but I would love the spin cycle to stop before midnight !!

How's best to tackle this?!! Can I say anything? Only been here two months myself.
So you would have to leave a note. (Why can't people read and understand the question?)

There is no excuse for anyone breaking the 10 pm curfew. Nearly everyone has to be up by 6 am and it is
outrageous to selfishly use the machine so late. "Maybe been watching the football, can't get away earlier... "

Sod the rules. My first question is: "how bad is the noise?" Is it so bad that you cant sleep or have to turn the telly up really loud to drown out the noise? or is it just a mild annoyance? If its the latter, I will live and let live - since you've just moved only 2 months ago.

Sounds like you are the newest in the building and if the offender has been doing it for quite some time and no one said a thing, chances are, you wont be very popular if you did. You really dont want to be known as the anal retentive new neighbour.

However, if its a ruckus, then like Barthalomew said, it isnt difficult to track the noise source. I like the example of what PegA's neighbour did - a little box of chocolates and a note requesting that they finish up with the washing before midnight as it is disturbing your sleep.

On the bright side though, you're on the fast track for being well integrated.

Blimey, you have a curfew? We are trusted to be out as late as we want (so long as we are careful, wear a vest and have 2p for the phone in case we're going to be late or have laddered our tights...)

Its a minor annoyance I guess when I'm just about to get to sleep. However, minor annooyances get on my nerves and result in a poor nights sleep. Call me sensitive

But there was one night when I couldn't sleep at all because the washing went on from 11pm to 1am There is a limit and I guess that pushed me to it.

I'm just getting used to living in an apartment. In the UK I had the luxury of having a detached home. Only annoyance was the dog snoring

I understand. I posted an incident with the neighbours and their visitors kids sometime back and some EFers have commented that I am sensitive to noise. Some people can tolerate baby elephants running above them day and night - but the sensitive ones like me cant. I literally had to turn up my telly to full volume just to drown out the kids running around.

But do remember that in the UK, you'd have the luxury of space whereas everyone lives on top of each other here in the city. The trick is to find the balance on when to live and let live - which I still need to learn.

If it really bothers you, then track the noise down, arm yourself with a small box of luxembuergelis from Sprungli (they sell tiny boxes of 4 for less than 10 chuffs) and knock of their door. You can introduce yourself and politely work out a compromise. The luxembuergelis should soften them up.

Good luck!

Perfect solution....although would have to hold my ground to not eat them myself

I believe I am rather sensitive. Think UNI days sent me loopy. Had a base guitarist living below me who took great delight in making my radiator and bed vibrate with his sub
