Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

I think that part of the problem with apartments here is that the layout seems not to make much sense.

The times I lived in apartment complexes in the US, the dishwasher was *never* right over someone's bedroom and neither was the laundry room / closet if the apartment had one. Bathrooms were on top of bathrooms on top of bathrooms and so were kitchens.

Maybe the newer apartments being built here are more like that, with floor plans that have important (noisy) features that match-up to the one above and below - hopefully so. (May be something to look for if / when looking for a new place too.)

Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

I think I've worked it out....I mean who's washing at 11pm onwards. The Penthouse above us....dam it!! They pull rank. These are the same people who take the biggest car parking space in the garage and have the smallest car.......then watch me trying to park the 4x4 in the tinest space

Oh well.....there is always ear plugs.

Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

No need- just have a pleasant chat with a smile - and it might well work. Then do go your Hauswart and/or agent. have you looked at your contract? What does it say? The longer you leave it, the more annoyed you'll become. Just talk to them - just because they live in the Penthouse , they haven't got any more rights than you.

Hey

One of my neighbours in they block of 6 including us keeps putting the washing machine on late at night.

I'm not sure who it is but would love the spin cycle to stop before midnight !!

How's best to tackle this?!! Can I say anything? Only been here two months myself.
Is there anywhere a washing "schedule" ? Here the "schedules" run Monday to Sunday from 07.00 until 22.00 . If in doubt, ask the house-administration about the house-rules

Sorry I have not explained well. We all have our own washing machines.....
I know an easy way to soften the problem. Ask the neighbour in question to put the washing machine onto a thick cushioning mat of whatever material.

Some people stick their washer on a thick, dense foam matt, thinking it will muffle the noise that gets transmitted through the building. I asked a service technician if it really works and he said, "no".

Perhaps a neighbor is unaware that they are disturbing others, and a simple friendly note near the entrance or mailboxes or whatever that late night washing has become a nuisance will suffice?
It DID work when I had problems with the computer-printer which sent out "shivers". I then followed the advice of my neighbour and organized a thick foam mat. My neighbour, when seeing me next time told me to have a test-run at 11.30pm . He then came over shortly before midnight, and said that he had hardly heard it in spite of listening, and asked whether I had heard HIS printer ? As he did have the same problem.

No, that service technician simply wants to sell a new machine

My immediate neighbours to the right always slam doors between 04.00 and 01.00, BUT the woman very often is hoovering also the place right outside our apartment ! and so I am tolerant about their weakness. I mean, what is needed in a place where many people live together are three things, A) tolerance B) tolerance C) tolerance

Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

Indeed Wolli - but it goes both ways, surely. There is no need for anybody to do their washing at 11pm. Here electricity is at a lower tariff from 21.00, so I am trying to get into the habit of putting washing machine and dishwasher at that 21.05. But a/ I have no neighbours and b/ it will be all over by 22.00.

No need to be unpleasant or rant- but do have a friendly word and explain it bothers you as you suffer from insomnia, or whatever. They may be totally unaware that you can hear it. What is there to lose?

I mean to speak with neighbours, also about small problems, is helpful. I generally speak WITH the neighbours instead of "about" them. But at the other hand, the person may have no time in the morning and arrive home rather late, and so, 11pm to her/him may just be THE time possible.

Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

In our apartment in Basel we had our washing machine / tumbler to. Like every other apartments.

We did use it when ever we want and they did too. It happened 2 times when the lady downstairs washed her shoes until 3 am. After that second time, I went down and asked her nicely if she wouldn't mind to wash them during an other time.... It made so much noise!

She deeply apologised and came back with a huge plant to make up for it! I never hear the shoes washed again at that time, just normal washing which wasn't loud at all.

OP, however you decide to handle it please do it in person instead of using the Swiss-style passive aggressive anonymous note. There's nothing worse imho.

Yeah, her boyfriend did tell her it wasn't a good idea but apparently she needed them for the party on the day after.

As a woman, how could I argue with that?

Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

Trainers make a lot of noise when jumping about in the drum - mind you, as an oldie, I just give them a scrub from time to time.

What is the harm in having a chat - nothing to lose. They might actually turn up to be really nice, despite the behaviour in the garage.
