Washing clothes at 11pm....

Hey

One of my neighbours in they block of 6 including us keeps putting the washing machine on late at night.

I'm not sure who it is but would love the spin cycle to stop before midnight !!

How's best to tackle this?!! Can I say anything? Only been here two months myself.

Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

Did you check the Hausordung? Most will have a clause or section that says no washing after 10 PM.

If it's written in the Hausordung, try making a photocopy and highlight the sections, and stick it on the machine.

Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

Our flat is next to the wash-maschine, and we have early starts. I would love to put up a notice 'All washes finished by ten'.
But our building mate beat us to it. About a week after we moved in we were greeted with a note, a sock and a mini toblerone: "So sorry, you left this sock and the waschekuche in a mess with soap powder, is this sock yours?
And every Sunday at 11pm a spin starts.

bah humbug.

Some people stick their washer on a thick, dense foam matt, thinking it will muffle the noise that gets transmitted through the building. I asked a service technician if it really works and he said, "no".

Perhaps a neighbor is unaware that they are disturbing others, and a simple friendly note near the entrance or mailboxes or whatever that late night washing has become a nuisance will suffice?

Go down and leave a polite note that they must finish before 22:00.

The next time look for the fuses and unplug it.
A polite note that explains how you are losing sleep, is better than instantly quoting rules. (IMO) Keep the rule quoting ( if you actually have/know the rules) for later, if necessary.

Can you say anything... do you have a mouth capable of speech? The only reason problems like this seem to go on forever is lack of simple communication.

Step 1. Put on best smile, talk to offending neighbour in politest possible way.
Step 2: If neighbour persists after 2 or 3 times (always in person, dont do the letter or note rubbish, its much less effective) talk to Hauswart or agency.
Step 3: Accept you may never be good friendly neighbours after this, and just smile sweetly at them whenever you see them.
Step 4: Profit?

Not a answer but I can guess why they are doing it.

Either they have a lot of washing... Or

They are after the cheap electricity?

Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

Back in the US, it was my habit to put in a load of clothes AND to run the dishwasher as I went to bed, so that the dryer could be run in the (early) morning before it got too hot and the dishes would be nice and sparkly in the morning as well.

Well. Laundry that late here was an easy "no" as we have a shared machine 6 floors below mine (with no lift) so tramping up and down all those stairs late at night was obviously not something folks would have been happy about.

The dishwasher though... turns out my below-neighbors have their bedroom right below my kitchen. They left us a nice note (along with some chocolate) asking that we have our dishes done before midnight as it was making it tough for them to sleep.

Perhaps if your neighbors are unaware (like I was), or inconsiderate, a nice note (with chocolate ) will work.

Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

Leaving notes works well for neighbors who don't realize they are disturbing the Hausordnuning. What can I throw at idiots on the street who stand outside of my building and have loud conversations at 1:00am on a Monday night?

It has to be hard enough to make an impact, soft enough not to get me sued, easy enough to throw straight, and cheap enough to not worry about losing it.

So no 5CHF coins.

Less gross, perhaps more effective... a nerf ball upon which is either "STFU", "halt schnauze", "kaiesse tu boca" (however it is spelled), "ferme la bouche", etc etc... and soak it in water as the added weight will help speed and trajectory.

Re: Washing clothes at 11pm....

sorry I hijacked your thread, Andrea. Back to the laundry....

most Hausordnung say there shouldn't be any audible noise emiting from the apartment between 10:00 and 7:00.

(But even if your loud neighbor is 3 floors above you, and even if you were out of town when the disturbance happened, it's still your fault because you're the new Auslander.)

Do it the Eidgenosse way: kidnap the clothes until the offender comes to your door to apologize.

For those who must respond but don't want to read the thread- just read the bold type above. Perhaps once more, to be sure-
