Lost my sapphire... devastated :-(

Just lost the stone out of my nan's antique ring she gave me years ago.

Despite looking everywhere in the house, I think it has gone. Very sad :-(

Is it possible to replace the stone? If so where in Zurich and how much will the damage cost??

Just an idea, Tanzanite is a very good but less expensive (i believe) gem in a similar colour. some say its value will actually increase. if you can find one or you know someone travelling soon to Tanzania, it might be worth considering replacing the sapphire with tanzanite.

Re: Lost my sapphire.....devastated :msncry:

its like saying how long the rope... its an unknown quanitity.

all depends on size, cut, clarity etc.. as sapphire isnt an expensive stone it shouldnt be too bad, but then aain it is switzerland so be prepared for a shock!

if its of significant size try contact some people in antwerp, i know its mainly diamonds but lots of dealers also deal with other stones and might be able to assist - it may well work out cheaper to take a day trip and have it done in another country than here in CH.

i went to have a ring made in antwerp and compared to the swiss price I saved over 50% including having a custom setting made and choosing a diamond at a dealers than buying a mass produced ring.

Re: Lost my sapphire.....devastated :msncry:

Depends very much on the sapphire size, quality and cut. Do you have a close photo of it. I have close photos of all the bits of jewellery I have just in case (lesson learnt a past experience). It should be covered under your household Insurance- talk to them. When I lost a ring in the UK, the insurance used the photos I had to get the ring re-made by their jeweller in Birmingham, and the result was excellent.

Make sure you tear up your hoover bag over some old newspapers before your throw it away- it might just be in there. If you went swimming in a pool recently, do go and tell them to look out next time they clear the filters. Also check all the u-bends for all your sinks. Hope you find it.

I recently lost my mum's favourite ring she gave me just before she died. I turned the house upside down about 10 times - and the other day, 6 weeks later - it turned up. Incredible, what a relief.

Edit - rob1, posts crossed.

I know this feeling from the time I lost a stone in a much cherished ring... It really sucks. BIG time!

A bit of a long shot I know but have you tried re-tracing your precise steps since when you last saw the stone still in the ring up until when you realized it was lost?

I've used this approach before when I've mislaid or can't find something and it has worked some times.

Another thought. Did you vacuum at all today? Might have been sucked up into the vacuum bag if so.

I hope you find it but if not, all the best with getting a replacement.

Have you checked the drain siphon traps in all of your sinks?

It's a dirty nuisance to do, but the most usual place to find rings, stones or other small things that slip off or fall in when washing your hands or whatever.

Ah yes, good idea GG.

Just for future reference, does doing this require someone with plumbing skills?

nope isha its pretty simple just make sure youve got a bowl under it cos the ubend is normally full of water.have a practice so when youre all flustered cos somethings gone down there, you know how to handle it. Owise, do the helpless maiden in distress on EF and Im sure some gallant young Effers from the hood will be round like a shot with their plumbers grips!

Thanks for suggestions everyone...

Vacuum checked!
Car checked!
Bin bag checked!
Sinks...will check.

Grass....yes the lawn not checked yet. Unfortunately, I was playing with the dog yesterday and it could be there. Its a large lawn, stupidly long grass as most are in Swiss so it could be anywhere. I guess I could erect and 'Honey I shrunk the Kids' style contraption to spen a lifetime finding it

May even go back to London and get a quote there. The ring is quite large, it was a dark blue Sapphire in fact hard to seem it was blue until put in the light. Oval gem, surrounded by 14 diamonds (luckily still have these). Haven't got a picture I'm afraid.

As crazy as this sounds, wait to check the grass until dark. Take a flashlight, (torch) and use it to search. If the stone is there you may see it better that way. I wouldn't mow the grass just yet. Good luck, I hope you find it. If you wear the ring all the time, it still may be in the house somewhere.

About 6 years ago, I lost the center stone out of my engagement ring. I ran some errands, got back into the house and noticed that the stone was gone. Not a big stone, just half a karat.

Two days later, I was getting into the car at dusk. Looked down at the seam in the concrete driveway, something shiny. There was my diamond. It must have fallen out when I got in or out of the car, and wedged itself in the seam. I probably ran over it at least once and it sat there through a heavy rain.

Anyway, I hope you'll find yours. I think looking for something shiny when it's darkish is a great idea.

As said, Birmingham Jewellery quarter is a much better bet for a replacement than London. But do ask your Insurance- it might be covered, and they might well have a good address.

For Birmingham, if you want me to I can look up the evaluation with name and address of business, as they did a really good job. Was the sapphire cut, or cabochon (uncut and polished).

I'm at the gem-dealers fair (IJL) at Earls Court London later this week, for several days. It's a trade show.
Most of the Hatton Garden and international gem dealers will be there.
Did you buy your ring from someone who might be there, and might remember it, or could look up your receipt?
If so, I could get a trade price for a replacement for you.

I lost a stone from a ring and found it in a glove - check in any jacket or coat you have worn in case the stone has come out if you put your hand in the pocket...
Good Luck...
