Re: Zurich , Geneva absent in World's Most Liveable City report

I wouldn't feel too badly if I were from Zurich or Geneva. I notice that London, Paris, and New York aren't listed among the top ten and I think most people would prefer to live in those cities if they could afford to than either of the "livable" cities in the top ten.

Re: Zurich , Geneva absent in World's Most Liveable City report

I actually agree on this list apart from Vienna, Helsinki and Perth and definitley NO, the entire Switzerland is not really a livable country:
  • Not much social life
  • Not much variety in anything, we just take what is available even if we totally want something else
  • Everything is closing at 7, whole life stops at 10
  • Everything costs an arm and a leg to have, specially the very basics of life (Accommodation, Insurance, Food)
  • Very limited variety of activities, specially for kids
  • Very limited space to feel really being free

Just to be clear, livable doesn't mean the quality of living......Switzerland is leader in quality of living for the ones who can actually afford it, even with Swiss salaries it's still unlivable.

I have been to Melbourne so many times and i assure you, it felt home the first time i landed there and it still feels home every time i return.

Buenos Aires is another city i would say it is very livable but because of the bad economical situation, it might be the reason it didn't make it to the list.

That's just my own 2 cts.

YES, accommodation, insurance and food cost a lot
YES, it is a small and narrow country
-
> variety of activities ? what do you mean exactly ? Kids can go cycling and swimming in summer, and cycling and skiing in winter, can go into the forest .... , etc

Re: Zurich , Geneva absent in World's Most Liveable City report

The article quotes "having low population density" as one of those good livable factors of measure. Honestly, I consider that to be a serious drawback for a city... one can find low denstity in a town if that's what one's looking for, but I like cities because they are... cities. I haven't read the report, but if it is based on such subjective facts, then it is plain garbage for anyone wanting to relocate somewhere. And, by the way, I have been living in Melbourne too and I'd choose Zurich, Geneva, Lausanne, Basel or Bern without hesitation.

Re: Zurich , Geneva absent in World's Most Liveable City report

Here's an article in today's Globe and Mail (national newspaper in Canada).
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...rticle2149397/

It seems the study categories are based on "livability" indices such as stability (crime, civil unrest); health care (availability, quality); culture and environment (climate, level of corruption, cultural availability); education (availability and quality); and infrastructure

"Affordability" was not one of them.

Based on the 5 categories outlined, I would have expected Züri or Gev to be in the top 10.

Strange indeed! Melbourne is the capital of "fruit salad weather" ...it is definitely overpopulated with anti-histamines. I guess the poor locals who travel the non airconditioned salmon packed MET were not invited to vote on this? As for crime....nowadays no city can really insulate itself from this... but, after living on the fringe of the CBD for 10 years crime is a huge problem, espcially because of the drugies...yet, this somewhat weighs out when you compare greater Victoria ' a stone throw away' along with Melbourne's sporting events.....this result is a SHOCKER!

Re: Zurich , Geneva absent in World's Most Liveable City report

Interesting that only two of the cities listed are non-English speaking (Vienna, Helsinki). Change one little piece of criteria and a whole new list of cities would pop up. These types of lists are only good for knowing there is something good about the cities, the rankings are highly subjective.

Re: Zurich , Geneva absent in World's Most Liveable City report

I am not surprised not seeing any of swiss cities in top 10 list. I lived in Helsinki and found it family friendly, free and good educational system, good quality of housing, solid wellfare system ( up to 3 years maternity leave) and low crime. i think it should be given no 1. spot.

Good to see Melbourne back on top again, the year after I left... Perhaps I should rush back again before it deteriorates in 2012?

Its all horses for courses anyway, every place has its good and bad points, just depends whether they are good or bad to you. I really like it here in Geneva but am also happy that the destination on my return ticket says Melbourne

Why strange? I've heard they're both full of rude, anally retentive locals and obnoxious indignant ex-pats. Not to mention over-zealous and aggressive ticket inspectors.
you left out the french burglars.

Re: Zurich , Geneva absent in World's Most Liveable City report

Zurich used to be number one, for example rated by Conde-Nast.

The Swiss, like the Germans, have admitted huge numbers of poor foreigners to keep the economic engines running, as a result, the public behavioral standards have suffered a little, also due to the Schengen agreement.

For example, if you open your doors to the poor, but then charge 3 CHF for a bathroom, you will have more urine stink in public.

Eventually Switzerland, like Denmark, will reneg on Schengen.
