Is this sufficient for us to live in Zurich? [96K, 2 adults + newborn]

A big hello from Yorkshire, everyone. I only just registered on this forum, after spending very long Google hours, I recon this should be the best resource for me to find out almost everything about Switzerland. I recently had a job offer in Zurich as a design engineer, they offered me 96K CHF. I thought this was a quite big figure when I firstly heard about it, but after reading so many information on internet, I think I am now getting closer to the ugly reality.

But seriously, can my partner, a new-born and I live in Zurich with such amount? (well, I haven’t forgotten all the deductions….) we are ordinary people, two bed apartment (at not too remote area to city) , one or maximum two meals outside per week, 3 or 4 films per month and maybe some activities in gym. Fortunately we don’t have to worry about kindergarten/school yet. Of course we do not expect any savings, really just hope to give our life a big change if oppertunity is right.

Any advice will be much appreciated here, thanks in advance.

Yes, it should provide a comfortable living in a clean wonderful country.

Search the rest of the forums and you will see that you can. Others will slate you for this question though....lol. Don't take it personally, it is the noob mistake of the year.

Thanks for the quick response guys. My apology if I haven't put this threat in the right place. Thought this would be categorized to Daily Life in Zurich?

You won't be rich, you won't be able to live very centrally in Zurich, but unless you're waiting to hear about another offer which will give you a "big change", take it. Assuming you were on a middling salary in the UK.

PS This forum is a social group. Please post an introduction!

As an aside , I would equate that to GBP 33-36K "ooop North"

96kchfs is equivalent to a £50k salary in london. you can do the conversion from London to Yorkshire.

Being both from the north in the UK having lived off that kind of salary and now living off a salary close to the OP's offer I'd say that you are pretty close to the mark there.

I would stay so, Usually around 20% of your monthly goes to rent expenses. You might consider a cheaper area to leave around Zurich. Transportation is very good here.

As everyone else said already...if you don't plan to buy a car (public transport is excellent in all cities), don't plan luxuries and don't need to live in a very central location you will do fine, and even be able to save a bit.

You should be fine if you learn to shop smart, food pricing often comes as a shock. Bear in mind that the average salary in this country is around 50k per year, probably a little more in Zurich. If you want two bedrooms, you'll need a '3,5 Zimmer-Wohnung', which starts at around 1800 for more central parts of town, 1500 in the outliers like Adliswil, Affoltern and Altstetten. Starts at being the key part, housing costs have skyrocketted in many places and you're competing with 100 applicants for the cheaper places.

Re: Is this sufficient for us to live in Zurich? [96K, 2 adults + newborn]

We could do it with our three kids on a similar salary. No car, Rent 1500chf (keep looking until you find something), apartment living (the norm here is apartments, houses are rare), and tapping into the free or almost-free family stuff (your babysitter will probably be your most expensive 'luxury' item ;-)

We have a 5 room apartment in Adliswil for under 2000chf a month. Newly renovated, no garage or storage (very unusual for switzerland) - perfect for us...just to show that it is possible...you just have to be 'resourceful' (our employer voucher for us, we basically had to argue with the landlord that the apartment was 'suitable' for our family of 5 and his standards were very high...in Australia they would never worry that the apartment 'wasn't good enough' for children to live in... (and I repeat, this was a 'newly renovated' apartment!)...

Re: Is this sufficient for us to live in Zurich? [96K, 2 adults + newborn]

Again thanks for all the replies. I am now having a bit more confidence for living in Zurich. And I think I will accept the offer. The burning issue to me is to find an actual place to live...Get in!!

It woouldn't hurt to ask for 5-8K more. They have probably come in on the low side as they always do here.

We will leave our car in UK at my mate's house temporarily. I am used to long driving to work on daily basis (100miles/day min.), I guess I will be very happy to use the public transport myself. But for long term, I imagine we as family will probably still need a car for weekly shopping, exploring etc. But we'll see.

never give out more than a quarter of your income on rent for a house.
That is your income when everything is deducted-tax etc.
You will probably be left with 7000 CHF a month or so.
