Basel vs Zurich

I guess a few of you might have lived worked in both Basel and Zurich and I wanted to get some first hand views on what you found to be the good/bad points of one versus the other as I'm considering a relocation.

As I only "worked" in Basel (Therwil) for 3 weeks in "federal service" I cannot really tell you, but my grandfather from Schaffhausen in about 1898/99 lived in Basel for a year and then moved to Zurich, and in about 1944 encouraged his daughter to move to Zurich

To start with, Basel has it closeness to the Elsass and to Süd-Baden in its favour, plus its usually milder climate (only 200 meters above sea-level), but it does not have a lake

Re: Basel vs Zurich

From reading posts on EF, it seems that it is a lot harder to find somewhere to live in ZUrich and that rent is higher there.
It also seems that Zurich has more mightlife than Basel.
ZUrich has the lake, but Basel has the RHine for swimming in ( floating down) and there is a lively summertime life along the edges of the river, in the riversdie parks etc.
BAsel is literally on the border of both Germany and France - this makes for ease of border hopping for cheaper shopping. THe Sat morning fresh produce market in St Louis is very popular with Basel folk, as is the nearby German supermarket.
Warmer weather in Basel in winter.

The SVP in the City of Zürich is not even represented in the City government. Its success on the cantonal level, in spite of its strongholds in the Oberland and similar areas is limited and below unionwide average. They may however succeed to capture one of the two seats in the Senate. The other leading contenders being from the Liberals and the Green-Liberals. Back to the City, the City government has a Social-Democrat<>Green majority

Re: Basel vs Zurich

thanks for the replies so far. i know zurich quite well and have visited basel a few times so know the city on a basic level. but i guess you can't really know a place until you've lived there and so i wondered if anyone had lived in both and could comment. e.g. would you scream "no, if you have a choice, do not live in basel!"

Re: Basel vs Zurich

I've never been to Zurich so can't answer on that half. But we came to Basel last year and its not bad - but I think the best things going for it are the proximity to France and Germany for shopping and the airport for lots of weekends back in the UK. I would go nuts if we couldn't get back at least once a month - mainly cause there really isn't any regular nightlife that suits our tastes but we keep looking.

That says it all: the best thing about Basel is how easy it is to get away from it
