Shoes pilling up

So has anybody else noticed that some people appear to love displaying every pair of shoes they own outside their apartment door. We have a family of 4 with 32 pairs displayed. Most shops in Zurich do not have such an extensive collection.
Do you think this is scent-marking of their territory. Certainly smells that way as you enter the building.

Re: Shoes pilling up

Then you have a pretty relaxed fire police commander Essentially, nothing should be in the hallway which could hinder the fire brigade or the ambulance services - 32 pairs of shoes are definitely a problem in this regard. There's an ongoing debate in my building because of this, some have very small, sensibly placed shoe boxes, while other have a pram, loads of shoes, decorations and so on, which will probably bring on a general ban on anything from the fire police. I currently have nothing since I am waiting to see how this ends...

Why they do it? Not enough space inside the apartment AND of course you take your shoes off before entering a home.

It's because the Swiss are obsessed with keeping their appartments looking brand-new for as long as possible so shoes have to be left outside. They like to wear slippers or "house shoes" inside and sometimes even have spares for guests!

Or perhaps some Swiss prefer not to traipse all the shite from the streets into their homes.

It always makes me wonder if the outside of their apartment looks such a mess I wonder what the inside looks like

That is similar to most Asian cultures! I did not know that...

Re: Shoes pilling up

Our house rules prevent us from leaving shoes and stuff outside our front door but we still take off our outdoor shoes and put slippers on. Leaving just socks on is an accident waiting to happen on these parquet floors plus there are a million things to stub toes on around our place...

I don't think it's a particularly Swiss thing to wear slippers at home - my parents always wore slippers and my grandma had one of those big single slippers which you can plug in to the mains to warm your feet (or maybe it was to recharge her pacemaker... )

Re: Shoes pilling up

We take off our shoes when we come in too, I have ever since we lived in Japan when I was a child - but we've usually lived someplace warm and I've a habit of going barefoot, this slippers thing is new.

I DO have a few pair for guests though, I'm already "Swissified" that much.

Re: Shoes pilling up

I grow up with slippers in the house. My Grandma made them in phantex. Which made me some very bad bruises. Not the best to wear on a shinny wood floor.... I still have many from her.

We also have slippers for guests and I do request people coming in to take off their shoes.

Nope, it isnt. There is a culture of no-shoes inside the house in many parts of Asia too. I grew up never wearing shoes into the house and it has stayed with me even when I was living in the UK.

I leave my muddy boots after a walk outside all the time. In fact, I currently have about 3 pairs of boots outside at the moment together with my flipflops 32 pairs might be taking the piss to some but from where I come from, they arent the most unsightly things along the corridor...
