Re: Riots in Zurich?

Survived the Zurich riots. Tear gas , water cannon , rubber bullets. Not a drop of my rum and coke spilled. I lost my wallet though. Still, a nice new Plasma TV though.

It's all quiet now. Police have set up a ring cordon at Paradeplatz. Young copper looked scared stiff, holding a rather large rubber bullet gun.

Move along now, nothing to see here.

What, no Prada shoes, turquoise boxes from Tiffany's or mink coats? Methinks you were looting the wrong shops

If you're saying you were looting, that's very bad! You should not steal

Re: Riots in Zurich?

Well I was there in a pub just 10 meters from where everything was happening. And there was max. 200 people, not 1000. And I can tell you, tear gas is a bitch for your eyes.

Re: Riots in Zurich?

We were about 200 meters from the Tibits where there was a big fire in front of, and our eyes and noses were burning crazy..
the funny thing was we ran away to the paralel street and everything was quite normal.?!?!

I saw many people ,but for me like not 1000s, but some hundreds, throwing bottles to the police...and police was responsing with launcing tear gas bombs and some shots...

Entire tram system in the area was collapsed for at least 2 hours..
Nobody knows what was this "illegal party" about???

Well Thanks for ruining probably the last SAturday night with such a nice weather in 2011 !! For sure rain season would help more...

Apparenty there are up to a thousand according to 20 Minutes. That's a bit more than 'a bunch of kids'
It wasn't a gang of angry protesters. It was (yes) a bunch of kids, a large bunch granted. Doubtful it was a 1000.

Anyway, seems that it was one of these flash mob things. And the kids started throwing things when the police started breaking the party up. I still think tear gas & rubber bullets was a bit much. They simply panicked.

They'll need to start getting prepared. These flash mob things are become very popular. In some cities they are flash mob robberies.

Re: Riots in Zurich?

I have it on good authority that Cafe Mandarin overcharged a drink on a Chav's bill, his dog got upset and ran across the crossing on a red light. A cyclist ran into the dog causing a scuffle between the dog owner, the cyclist and a ticket inspector who popped out of nowhere. The owner of Pretzel King came over and handed the cyclist a tissue, a bill for 8 francs and a stern look. This upset a pan pipist who threw his CD at the Pretzel King owner, it missed and hit a Policeman who immediately arrested the wrong Chav. A crowd saw this and immediately ran off, bumping into 12 shaven headed punks, another dog and a cinema. A tram driver saw this, and carried on.

That's when I stepped in.

Re: Riots in Zurich?

I fully agree to mini here. For those who cannot read the German 20min article: It mainly quotes a police press release and exclusively tells this one side of the story:

Hundreds of kids met at the bellvue station to have an ILLEGAL party. The police stayed all nice and calm till somebody climbed on the tram stop houses. Then the cops went in to friendly ask them to come down as they would be too close to the electric wires over the tram lines. All of a sudden did the kids throw stones at the cops and set trash cans on fire. Only then did the police move in with tear gas and rubber bullets. Several people got hurt.

I can only call this article bullshit. I have witnessed the Stadtpolizei Zurich in my seven years several times and I have never seen them de-escalating anything. They were the toughest ones and fastest to throw people on the floor to arrest them, but friendly was not exactly what I have seen when they dealt with party goers on Langstrasse on a regular Saturday night - let alone the cops at the football games.

I'd love to get some slightly more balanced views from a newspaper - you know, the type of stuff journalists do in other countries: talk to people and interview them what happened instead of rewriting police press releases.

Clearly certain members of ZH's law enforcement are taking "Knabenschiessen" a little too literally this year....

Re: Riots in Zurich?

It sounds as if the media over-dramatised the situation. Glad it wasn't as bad as first reports indicated.

Hope that everyone caught up in this got home safe and sound.
