Which Swiss Newspapers do you read?

Personally, I find the Blick a complete waste of 1.80chf. It only occasionally has something interesting, but otherwise has nothing you won't read in 20 minutes, which for a freebie is not bad.

Which ones do you like and why?

(And yes, this thread was made in an attempt to get Englishforum to 10'000posts before midnight Friday).

Re: Which Swiss Newspapers do you read?

Hmm, I thought there'd be a race to 10,000. Umm, this thread probably won't last the year. I read the NZZ, 20Min but not Heute. Heute's lousy: who's the Creative Director there?

Re: Which Swiss Newspapers do you read?

Ever heard of the magazine swiss news?
I know it's english, and therefore a little OT, just thought
it might be of interest for those of you who don't understand
german (yet) and would like to know what's going on in this country.

We only just found it because we were looking
for advertisement possibilities. Just picked up the
latest issue from the kiosk. IMHO not a bad mag at all.

Re: Which Swiss Newspapers do you read?

The Blick was the first newspaper i ever read here, it was easy to recognise words i knew and of course the pics helped. There weren't any freebe newspapers then and the Blick was every where you went. I wouldn't buy it these days but it was a big help at the time.

Re: Which Swiss Newspapers do you read?

I'll sometimes read the freebie Baslerstab (delivered to our mailbox daily) or the Basler Zeitung.

My daily paper of choice: International Herald Tribune...but only when I am traveling or have too much time.

Does looking at images on German newspapers count? :-) I stick to English news sources unfortunately. I will try to change that!

Re: Which Swiss Newspapers do you read?

Calvin and Hobbes in the 20 mins.
That's where I'm learnig German from

I agree that the 20 mins is not bad for a freebie. Compared to the Glasgow Metro, it's positively high brow.

Swiss News is excellent, but as all non-daily papers fighting with the problem that people nowadays are looking for hourly news. It also is popular among many Swiss people as it often has information not to be found elsewhere.

Re: Which Swiss Newspapers do you read?

Le Temps fairly regularly, Le Matin and the TDG occasionally, Le Nouvelliste before trips to the Valais to get ideas. All, alas for the publishers, absolutely free on the web.

Re: Which Swiss Newspapers do you read?

I read the Sports section of both 20 Minutes & News, then skim the front 'half' until I get to the puzzles ... my personal challenge is to see how much of the Kreuzworträtsel I can complete without a dictionary (or internet search) ... my best is eleven answers, which gets letters in maybe a fifth of the boxes ... good for working on synonyms, as a good percentage of the clues are just a word or two, and you need another to mean the same.
btw, anyone know the Spanish word for two?

I read Swiss News (and write for them too, so perhaps I am biased!) ... but I think it has a nice mix of news and politics, including a financial advice column ... and then interesting tourism articles, and a funny piece called "expat adventure" ... many of us have been there, done that. (And no, that's not my column. )

Also, the "what's on" calendar usually gives me at least one great tip each month. October's was the cheese festival in Elm, Canton Glarus. A delicious, cowbell-banging good time!

Re: Which Swiss Newspapers do you read?

I read 20 Minutes when I can get it and Blick Am Abends. My German isn't brilliant so I find reading simple reporting like these easy and helpful.

These days most news is online but I like that the traditional newspaper is still strong.
