Things I wish I had known before moving here

If I could travel back in time, I would tell myself the following:

swiss german is really different to german [understatement warning]
keep internet purchases below CHF65
flights should be booked well in advance
all the girls I like will be smokers
most people rent...for good reasons
one should be a good cook
cablecom's CHF 75 for TV and internet deal is quite good
Luxor is a good gym for guys
buy a bike, not a travel pass
cheap temporary furniture can be had in Lipo
don't import fancy french period furniture
job agents charge a lot [understatement warning]
meat is expensive [understatement warning x2]
canadian visas are now quite hard to get [understatement warning]
tandoori BBQ will be your favourite restaurant
you and that blonde half your age won't last
you were right to be suscipious at the interview
you will meet more people in one weekend in Vienna

Swiss-German is very similar to
- Bavarian
- Southern Baden-Württembergisch
- Vorarlbergisch
- Tirolerisch
- Saxonian

---- Wienerisch is not the same as Berlinerisch

> Swiss-German IS German, even if not exactly the language of the Kingdom of Prussia

she was one of the few who didn't smoke. But I find stunners are usually trouble. One of my exes even called herself "trouble bubble"!

That's true only for those below 30, i.e. a minority.

There is the Viennese saying that the Central Cemetery in Vienna is only half as large as Zurich but twice as fun.

120 K is the standard acceptable salary for ex-pats. If you are earning over this, you are bloody rich.

Re: Things I wish I had known before moving here

I would add:
-your swiss neighbors are watching you carefully, even though it seems like the are ignoring you.
-only take your garbage out on garbage days and in the black bags
-for every jerk there is another amazing kind soul (I think this applies worldwide but it is easy to forget sometimes)
-you will have many surprise bills for things you wouldn't even think to ask about beforehand
-your home currency will deteriorate by almost 25 cents over the course of six months, change your currency a year ago.
-eat as much meat as you can before you come, and bring some iron pills with you for when you can't afford to eat meat often here
-take some language lessons before you get here
-swisscom's "unlimited" high speed internet, is only high speed for the first 10GB
-and for trailing spouses: have an open mind of what would constitute success or personal meaning during your time here, be patient, be friendly, and stay connected with your support system at home

Yup, those are the ones off the top of my head.

Aren't you the one who told me the reason nobody understands my German around here is due to my accent from my Bavarian Mother/Grandfather?

'Similar' and 7 CHF might get you a filter Starbucks coffee

A warning that you'll get slugged for MWSt (VAT) plus "service charges" if your (foreign-sourced) internet purchase exceeds CHF 65.

Adding my 2 rappen:

- Ausweis for trailing spouse may take a while (my case 11 weeks)
- Living in small village, people will know who you are and where you are from before you can introduce yourself

Hey, i hope you wrote that sentence just for kidding or to be ironic. I'm in process to transfer me to Switzerland and you scared me :-P (also i LOVE red meat).

I think that possibility to feed yourself in a complete and healthy manner is the base of living, just 1 or 2 step up surviving.

If someone take decision to emigrate in another country i guess he/she is willing to do it because his/her living standard will improve a lot. Being in a condition of buy iron pill because you will not be able to buy enough red meat do not represent, in my humble opinion, an improvement on own quality of life (excepting if you are coming from some 4th world country).

Re: Things I wish I had known before moving here

i like! mine:
- in winter the cloud cover never clears, if you miss the sun for some weird reason - go into the mountains - they always have sun!!!
- most swiss also shop across the border - don't be so patriotic - buy your ski clothes and kids gear in DE or FR!
- many of your very old friends will suddenly remember you and come for a visit in the swissôtel - say NO, guests are expensive even if you're home sick!
- recycling are good for your pocket, but cool it, you can't get caught for cans in your zurisack!
- phoning home is VERY cheap!
- keeping in touch with home is very time consuming...and you do loose touch...
- you won't ever understand the school system because they change it as it goes along - just leave it - you'll have a elternabend in the beginning of every school year to learn more about it - what will you do about it if you know about it earlier.
- you get sick of and feel stupid to keep saying - i'm not from here, could you please help...after a year, just leave it - they didn't know everything either!
- no you probably won't see a lot of southern hemisphere sports except if you go to a pub...and you will miss it!
but you just got to lurv this place!!!
