My beautiful red Swiss pass arrived today!! Yee Haa...I am now a card carrying member!! It's been a long, long process, both mental and bureaucratic, but if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Now, if I could just pronounce Chäsiküchli correctly..
Congratulations ! Welcome to the club

Seriously were is the red shoes business coming from, the swiss do not wear them that much, ive been keeping my eye open and i very rarely see them.

Congratulation btw for joining the ranks of the greatest country on earth
CORRECT ! I since reading about read shoes in the EF have closely watched people all around. It in reality is most difficult to detect a single person wearing RED shoes.

But relax, the "red shoe wearers" most likely are English speaking expats

From a wonderful very funny book called Swiss Watching.
And yes, since this had caught my attention, I've been noticing the red shoes as well

Congrats Karl !

When reading about the red shoes in the EF I started to look out and needed many weeks to detect somebody wearing read shoes

so that I am wondering from what balcony you were staring at people

Well it's the author of the book (Swiss Watching) that noticed it first.
Since then I've been having visions of red shoes everywhere !
(and it was a very good excuse to buy a pair too !)

I'd suggest reading it, it's very very well written and pleasant and informative. The author clearly appreciates Switzerland and yet at the same time has a great sense of humour.

So no balconies involved

Dear OP, congrats again (sorry for the deviation of your thread.... now that you have a fine bright red Passport, you'll need to consider the correct footwear)

Can't say I've ever noticed any red shoes. Maybe the Fribourgeois have more sartorial elegance than the Bernese.

I HAVE read it from the start to the end and can confirm that it IS great. There are some really minor errors, but overall, the book is excellent. Since reading it, I started to look out for red shoes and did do so in Zürich, Schaffhausen, Luzern, Bern and Basel with a MINIMAL result, and this in spite of red being the Swiss national colour and red t-shirts being in use and having been so for decades. For quite a while you even could buy red jeans ranging from gloss-red to "shabby-red". I did have such "shabby-red" jeans when in London in autumn 72, and was the only person with RED jeans there

The Chäschüechli and Chuchichäschtli thing is not that important. What counts is that you lost your sense of humor, turned utterly opiniated, started bumping everyone in the street, staring at people, exspecially expats, leaving mean little notes in the laundry room and wearing red shoes. Welcome.
Captain you forgot many other things:

You just buy horrendous hawaiian shirts
You shower once a week and wear the same shirt, socks, underwear the whole week (and criticize your neighbors when they use the washing machine once a week).
You buy a trombone or a trumpet and you go to Fasnacht once a year.

Pah ! I bet your Swiss passports don't have a warning from the Queen

Her Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State Requests and requires in the Name of Her Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance, and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary.

i.e. don't mess with this gentleman

P.S Well done
Once upon a time I thought that maybe I might trade my passport in for that of another colour ! But as I grow older and wiser I realise how blessed I am to hold my British passport. Bless you Castro for quoting her Majesty and reminding us Brits of how lucky we are...........

When becoming Swiss, you do NOT have to give up your old citizenship. There are quite many people with double-citizenship and even with triple citizenship here

My wife and kids could also get a third if they wanted; she could renew her Irish passport and apply for theirs, but maybe 3 is going over the top a bit.

Re: My red passport arrived!!

I guess you know what you have to do now:

1) Schweizer wählen SVP

2) Rise above the Ausländer on this forum, assume an air of superiority

3) Defend pointless conservative Swiss traditionalism just because you can

Please note that you will now, possibly, have to take umbrage at the use of the term 'Switzerlanded'. Please, possibly, modify your responses accordingly.

You can have your British passport and keep it too, should you qualify for an Aussie passport.

I have the feeling Quax has done very little research in this area
