Well I had it serviced recently including all the preparation for importation (engine cleaning, official emmissions certificate etc) and it was only 600chf at a recognised dealer. You must drive an awful lot to spend more than 300chf a month on petrol although my car is diesel so is very economical on fuel.

I'll admit that I hadn't included purchase and depreciation costs but even then it's not impossible to run a car sensibly on what I quoted. Oh and we have fully com insurance too.
OK so 50 a month has been spent out of your budget for the year. I don't know your cars age but 250 a month depreciation is not out of the question, I suspect your full running costs will be more than 500 a month.

I pay 300 chf a month for helth insurance with only a 300chf deductible.
Don't know why OH chose that option as I haven't been to doctor once since we arrived. Must up the deductible next year I think.

Methinks I should sort out getting a health check before the end of the year with loads of expensive checks (to take me above the 300chf) just so that I feel like I've got something out of it.

Why would you prefer living in Geneva to France?
A non-EU wanna have a work permit to work in Geneva.

Re: Is it able to live in Geneva with 5700CHF for 2 persons?

I think it'd definitely be doable, although you'll need to find somewhere cheap to live and make sure that you get subsidised health insurance. Before we were married, my husband and I lived quite comfortably in Geneva on about 4000CHF a month BUT that was over a decade ago and we were subletting a flat at way below the going market rate. From experience (living in the Pâquis with no parking space) having a car was an unnecessary, expensive hassle.

As I am a non-EU, I need to move to Switzerland with my husband, wait for 4 months to get a B permit, which makes me have the right to work in Switzerland. Before I have a B permit and income (also takes months to find a job), I don't know how hard life I will have in Geneva.
If you're planning to work at some point, I say go for it. And it also depends on how much you plan to save each month. We chose France for that reason among others - we pay 200 euros a month health insurance for both of us and that's 150% coverage and with me pregnant. Switzerland is definitely quite a bit higher but then you have to consider the lower taxes there.

Whilst it's possible to live on less, I would not choose to move to Geneva on that salary. I don't believe you can find an apartment in Geneva for 1500 at this time.

Have you included Parking, insurance & repairs in your calculations for a car? Do you don't own a car?

Edit, I don't doubt you could live very well in Neuchatel for the figures your quoting, I think Geneva is another matter especially for apartments.
1500CHF isn't the figure I came up with. I was working with a figure giving by one of the people who think he will live like a Hamster.

Up it to 2000CHF per month then. He will still be AT LEAST 500CHF of free cash per month positive.

Hello all,

Currently, we live in France, and we would like to move to Geneva.

With my husband's net income of 5700CHF (I don't have income), renting an apartment (1-bedroom,1 living room, around 50m2) in Geneva, is it able to live in Geneva for 2 persons? We will buy food in France every weekends.

Other questions:
1. I saw an advertisement of T3 apartment. It only includes 1 bedroom with 1 living room, so what does 3 piece apartment mean? What is the 3rd piece?

2. If we move to Switzerland from France, will the net income increase or decrease? It will change a lot?

3. With the company FREE in France, we pay internet+TV+telephone only 30euros every month, how much is it in Switzerland?

4. How much for 2 person's medicine insurance? 700CHF per month?

I am afraid we can not afford the living in Switzerland with one person's salary.

Many thanks for your information!
Well I think you should maybe consider also working if possible

Sure it would be possible for 2 people to survive on 1500chf a month-

Rent a room 500
Living expenses 620 (10 chf a day per person)
Medical Insurance 380

Sure it's possible, but you will have a far better life in other countries on that sort of income-

Edit of course actually paying medical insurance at that level of income is unnecessary, once registered the insurance has to be provided regardless of paying the premiums. Until the income increases considerably there would be no practical way of collecting.

Re: Is it able to live in Geneva with 5700CHF for 2 persons?

5700 CHF for 2 is hardly doable, after taxes it will be 4400 CHF (22% deductions + your AVS deduction even if you don't work), finding an apartment for 1500 now is nearly impossible, i have friends looking for 3 pieces in this range since 1 year and no luck, hardly you get max of 14 offers per month on major sites and most are given to close contacts or people on waiting list since, here are 2 example searches within your criteria:

Other expenses:

Health insurance is anywhere between 500 to 800 for both of you.
Food 800 to 1000 CHF
Transport 140 CHF for both
Electricity 80 to 100
Liability insurance 50 CHF per month for both
T.V + Internet + Telephone 125 CHF
Billag (T.V License) 40 CHF
Mobile phone 100 to 200 CHF on very moderate usage for both of you

Based on this:

Expenses: Min. 3,335 CHF if you don't do anything in life but stay home, goto work and if you ever find apartment for 1,500 CHF, I would say more realistic figure is 3800 to 4000 CHF as minimum, 400 CHF is not a great margin to consider moving to Geneva specially when you will need to have social life which will cost you money going out, every time you go out you'll spend anywhere between 80 to 400 chf depending on what you do

I would tell you, based on 6 years experience living here, you always get smashed by unexpected expenses and bills even if you plan very well + you won't really enjoy living in Geneva on this salary.

Lucky for him the 5700 was his net salary so he would have 1700CHF spare each month by your calculations

Re: Is it able to live in Geneva with 5700CHF for 2 persons?

My husband made around this when we lived in Geneva. We lived in a small, 1 bedroom apartment in Vernier. I had a small income from being a nanny. We definitely survived, we were fine, but we didn't have tons of cash lying around. We cut corners in certain places.

5700net is the income we have when we live in France.

I am wondering with the salary 7150CH (before tax), how much we can have after tax? ----Living in Switzerland, married, no kids, spouse don't work.

Thank you very much for all the detailed information you provided. It really helps!

7150CHF=Approx. 5550 CHF after all deductions incl taxes in CH (22%)

You should be able to live with that, don't expect a fancy life though...you'll have to manage your income to enjoy

You can definitely live at that NET income in Geneva, but the key here is finding the right apartment which right for your budget.

5700 net is livable but just about and won't give you a nice lifestyle. Very difficult to find a flat here also. I wouln't move here for that money. Stay living in France and commute is a much better option.

Re: Is it able to live in Geneva with 5700CHF for 2 persons?

Just one more vote for "it is doable but not fun" and it all hinges on your accomodation.

First, you have to find something cheap, just like you and everyone else in Geneva; secondly, if you do find something under 2000 francs and put yourself on the list, you will be competing with several hundred people, many of whom will have higher incomes, which will push you down on the list. Please don't underestimate how tight the Geneva housing market is, some people look for months/years.

Subletting is an option if you think that one day you will work and can bump the gross income up to be more attractive to rental agencies.

If you manage to secure reasonably priced accomodation quickly, I lived on that for two people, but this was seven years ago. All our bills were paid and we weren't "hurting" for money per se, but we weren't going on vacation or going out to dinner and we didn't have a car.

Many people living for years in Geneva are paying rents well below what the current market rate is. People moving here need high salaries just to get by.

I fully agree with this. My new neighbors (at least 5 years to present) are paying 100 to 150% more than what i pay for.
