What's the weather like in October?

Hello,

I have family coming in October and want to try and plan outdoor activities. Had a search through previous threads but unable to find anything that talks about the weather.

So, what is the weather normally like in October?

If you are lucky, it can often be the nicest month in CH - with beautiful colours, very bright weather and the best/sharpest mountain/alpine views. If you are lucky, days will be warmish but nights can be cool. But there again ... we are not always lucky. Also got visitors from the US early October, so fingers crossed.

Wet and chilly.

Layers, some water proof / resistant outer clothes and shoes that will be okay on wet streets while keeping your feet warm would be best to pack.

Activities, well, depends on how hearty ya'll are. After years in Florida, I tend to want to huddle over my heissemarroni (roasted chestnuts) with some hot chai or hot chocolate if I'm outdoors BUT there are a good number of festivals for the season around the country, including Herbstmesse here in Basel, which is quite fantastic. Draws me outside for sure.

Last October was absolutely wonderful here in the Jura.

Less precipitation than over the summer, but temperatures dropping fast towards winter

As granny would say, "Winter drawers on..."

What is great about it is the brightness and clarity of views- the very best time for photos.

I object to the first statement. Sure, compared with Florida, it's wet and chilly, but that's the case at any time of the year.

As mentioned by Odile, October often is a fairly sunny month, much sunnier than, for instance, June, albeit colder. In certain areas of the Midlands, a.k.a. Swiss Plateau, there may be fog, especially in the morning, but just go a few hundred meters up, and you often will find plain sunshine. The Midland fog pea soup usually gets annoying and depressing in November.

According to my OH, October in Switzerland is much nicer than September in Michigan.
