Bag check at Coop/Denner, Renens

I moved to Lausanne from Lugano. I went to Coop and Denner near Renens station. I had to show my bag at the counter at both places (while getting billed). Thank god after I had to show it at Coop, I kept the receipt in case they wanted to check at Denner too, and they did.

It is strange because I was in Lugano for two years and this never happened. Any comments ?

Re: Bag check at Coop/Denner, Renens

I understand that there are big problems in Vaud with the Hyderabad Gang, who go into shops - all innocent, like - empty entire shelves into their bags, then go down the back of Lausanne railway station, where they sell their loot on to unsuspecting passers-by.

Apparently they have special bags, bigger on the inside than on the outside, for which the shop staff have been trained to keep a very cautious eye out: cautious, because there have been at least three cases of security guards falling into the bags as they were searching them, never to be seen again.

I'd let them do their business without hindrance, and be sure not to buy victuals from strangers behind the station, if I were you.

This has happened to me a few times in France. They even wanted to look in my son's Lightning McQueen rucksack, which I thought was a bit off. It spooked him for a while every time we were at a cash-desk in a shop or supermarket.

Must be a Francophone thing, because I've only seen this in France, and apparently it is common in Romand areas, too.

Re: Bag check at Coop/Denner, Renens

That hasn't happened to me yet in the large Coop and Migros of Ecublens/Renens, maybe your looks are suspicious no, seriously, shoplifting is more common than everyone thinks, e.g. I had a friend who used to get an extra apple (and other stuff) inside the plastic bag after having weighted it, and she's not poor at all!

Here in Zug they keep you under surveillance. The coop store has cameras everywhere. I think I would prefer them checking my bag.

They do this at Basel SBB Migros too - but people always say that Basel has more in common with Suisse Romande than the other German-speaking cities

Re: Bag check at Coop/Denner, Renens

I got stopped by DIY store security after I had left the store. They got me at the car park for apparently stealing one nut. They said that their security camera showed me putting the nut in my back pocket. I told them I came in with the nut so I am leaving with the nut.

I was comparing my nut with their nuts to find a match. Their nuts were not same so I put my nut back in my trousers and walked off. He took one look at my nut and realized that I possessed a very special nut. No harm done but an apology would have been nice.

Re: Bag check at Coop/Denner, Renens

I'm really not comfortable leaving my bag with anyone, especially because I carry around my laptop the whole time, can you imagine if it went "missing" especially with the high crime rates in Geneva - I guess you can't blame them for checking - but there should be a definate demographic they are looking for to decrease their thefts, not in kids bags or .. well, MY bag ! If someone wants to check my bag before I go into the store, I shop in another store ... It works both ways as far as I am concerned ...

This is not a "Romandie thing"--this is a Renens thing. That whole area around the Renens train station is pretty sketch-tastic. It's Switzerland's version of a dark crime pocket (as in a very lame crime pocket).

We were assigned a furnished studio in Renens when my husband first arrived and thought that Switzerland sucked for the first month. A bunch of 14 year old gangsters on the street and bars full of men only who watch you like zombies when you enter.

But when we moved, we realized that Switzerland was great. Stop going to that Migros. It blows. Go to the big one in Crissier, 4 km away (or the big Coop too, that one is pretty nice). You'll thank me

Do they not have to have a reasonable explanation of why they would do this rather then standard practice? It has never happened to me but if it did I would be furious for wasting my time.
It's a real shame the trust element is being lowered because of some problem people. I still love the fact we have some places selling fruit & veg, flowers on a Sunday with an honesty system as nobody actually is working.

Re: Bag check at Coop/Denner, Renens

It used to happen to us all the time in nearby France - but now we are regulars at one particular supermarket, they never ask anymore.

If they do ask, it is for a very good reason- sadly that they have had a spate of shop-lifters. Where I live in CH, or in nearby Neuchatel or Yverdon, we've never ever been asked to show our bags.

Re: Bag check at Coop/Denner, Renens

For me Media Mart is one of the sights to see, as not seen any shop like it in UK, they have lockers outside for one to put One' bag, that for me is great, as one can wonder around without any problem examining what One wants.
Other shops I go into, I always make sure my bag is closed before I enter.
It never ceases to surprise how the cashiers ask in Switzerland if One wants the receipt! Some years ago I did Jury Service in UK, the receipt was how one would prove one had paid, ie innocent. In Makro in Greece after the casher and before exit, someone always checked the receipt against what one had brought or was taking out. In my student days I worked in shops and that included surveillance for shoplifters, but it was difficult, it was only after someone left that I realised certain people had taken stuff, but not too often and low value. Capes that were the fashion back then one had to watch, cripes the stuff people had under them when challenged. If you are challenged smile and say sure, remember it keeps the price down when they find the real culprites. However they should apologise when they find nothing and thank you for your cooperation, maybe a money off coupon on the next shop would not go amiss.

Reminds me of years ago in London, Newspaper sellers if they wanted a break, left a plate for the money. A tourist saw it, went back to his own country and did the same, however on returning eveything was gone including his stall, poor thing.
