| | Hot Water in North Zürich?
Yesterday I got a call to say that the hot water was off in our apartment in Oerlikon. After some investigation we discovered it was the whole building. I called our Landlord, he checked and then called back to tell us that it was related to the ongoing roadworks on our street. The hot water would be back by midnight.
Midnight comes and goes, and this morning - no hot water. I trudge to the train station and meet a colleague - he tells me he has no hot water (he lives in Glattpark/Opfikon). He knows someone in Seebach also without hot water. Anyone have the foggiest idea what is going on?
I presumed the problem was down our street in Oerlikon - where they have dug up the entire road - but it seems more widespread. So if you are in Oerlikon today, and a foul wind of discontent blows by - now you know why.

Are you on the Fernwärme network? This delivers warm water to many addresses around your area.

I never heard that one before | | | | | Indeed it is. I think it has something to do with the Fernwärme system (not sure of spelling). This is the rubbish burning system which you can get plugged into for hot water and what not. Website: http://www.fernwaerme-zuerich.ch/
I have no technical knowledge of how it works, but we do have a huge boiler room downstairs, however this seems to be some kind of capacitor/store - it relies on this Fernwärme to power it.
I was wondering if anyone who knew more about their building water supply knew what the problem was - and when it would be fixed.

I never heard that one before | | | | | Sure, there's a big boiler by Hagenholz and about one third of houses in Zürich (and also some in Opfikon) are connected to it. So basically your water is heated by incinerating trash, and they generate electricity at the same time. In the winter it runs the heating as well. They even have a system of tunnels under Zürich to carry the pipes and there is a little train running in those tunnels to do maintenance. All very nifty stuff. | The following 14 users would like to thank amogles for this useful post: | Captain Greybeard, Corbets, grumpygrapefruit, lrmanish, MathNut, olygirl, Peg A, Sash_, Stifoan, Stu&Kara, tom tulpe, Tom1234, Wollishofener |

Problem is fixed... Hot water will return today by late afternoon as it takes some time to re-heat the water... Not sure what the actual problem was, but it was a major issue for about 24 hours...

I had no problem last night, so may be I am not connected to this system! I would hate if I were connected to this system and it breaks in the Winter!

Oops...looks like this is taking longer than expected My newest information is the hot water will return during the night and we should once again all enjoy a hot morning shower...
For those who can read German: Article in Tages-Anzeiger
I guess once every 30 years or so is not the end of the world (although I wish I didn't just go for a sweaty jog)

And the worst in our street here is to come next weekend
