Lemmings in search of an ocean

So, today's WTF? moment came when, after parking in a downtown garage to go shopping for some malt at a specialty store, I came up to the exit and my TomTom was having difficulty getting a signal. I drive into a side street and stop behind a parked car (though admittedly not a parking space but not blocking the street, either), roll down the window and wave the damn thing in the air in search of a signal. A minute or three later, I look in my rearview mirror, and see some guy behind me. Then, a minute later, another car stops in the lane, behind this guy. And then another one. I'm starting to wonder, WTF? Finally, the tomtom gets a signal and I drive merrily on my way, but look behind me and notice that the cars are pulling out behind me. And I was thinking to myself...Uh, what? In NYC or Boston, if I was blocking the lane, I'd get a honk, some profanity, some hand gestures and, possibly, some dude at my window telling me to move it or else. Here, I had pulled over momentarily (well, about 3-4 minutes waiting for a satellite), not blocking the street, and people just piled up behind me.

So..are drivers just on auto-pilot like lemmings in search of an ocean or is there some law that says you can't pass an car that has pulled over, but is still running?

I vote lemmings. I've noticed similar behaviors as well. I blame the 50kph universal speed limit.

I was kinda hoping there was some sort of archaic driving law in play here as the guy behind me must have been 80+ or so. Though, the dudes in the black sports cars stopped behind him in the middle of an open street looked young enough to drive on without being bothered by such sorts of old laws. Then, again, this is Switzerland. Bizarre, really.

Maybe the first guy that pulled up behind you thought that you were in a parking spot getting ready to leave, then after you pulled out, realized his mistake and took off after you. If he really was 80+ as you say, then the person following HIM might have been a family member keeping an eye on him, hoping the old dude wasn't out running people over in town.

Sadly, not an alcoholic one. Barley malt syrup and powder. I had no idea the crunchy healthy types think this stuff must be good for you as you can only get it in one of those sorts of shops. I feel a bit out of place shopping in those, really. I often imagine asking for a couple packs of smokes and a six pack at the check out just for giggles.

I do have 2 lovely expressions of Ardbeg in my sideboard, though. It's Islay or the Highway.

Maybe you look like the local dope dealer and drive the same car and parked in the same spot?

In life - there are those who lead and those who follow ..... the latter being the easiest and safest option for many - normally taking any need for thinking out of the equation.

The German language has a word for one who leads .....
.... popularised over 70 years ago.
