Re: Whats so great about living in Zurich ?

It's easy....you don't need a car, everything is around the corner, you are in the mountains in half an hour, friends don't live to far away (once you found some) and you have a good nightlife. It's great for families...I really do like Zurich, even if I moved to Baden after ten years....

Re: Whats so great about living in Zurich ?

Zurich on the plus side:
Chocolate and nature close by - the air does not smell like something breathed out by a car - public transport actually works (France, anyone ?)
On the minus side:
Thinks of itself as paradise - not as fascinating as a really large city like New York - swissgerman is not easy ...

Globally I would say Zurich is a compromise, not a coup-de-coeur (could not find the equivalent expression in english ...)

Re: Whats so great about living in Zurich ?

Me and my husband are from Stockholm, Sweden and have been living in Zürich for 1 year. If I had my family and friends from Sweden in Zürich I would stay there for ever. I love the nature, the mountains, the clear water and the fact that you can go to Italy, France, Germany and many other countries for a day trip. And the Alps are just fantastic, both in summertime and of course in wintertime if you like skiing or snowboarding.

We live in a really nice area in Zürich and even if Sweden is a nice country aswel its difficult to find somewhere where its so safe and calm as it is where we live.

I would recommend zürich living people to go 1 hour to the german city Konstanz to buy food much cheaper and its also a very nice place to visit.

We just love Switzerland and the only thing we miss from Sweden is family and friends.

The many drinking fountains found just about everywhere. A small thing but really nice. Makes a great change from buying bottled water all the time.

Re: Whats so great about living in Zurich ?

So the reason to be in Switzerland is money... if you love money just as much as the Swiss do you might like it. If you are not completely desperate or in love with money you better go somewhere else ;-) And indeed the USA is full of bad areas but also in Europe most cities are taken over by the trash and getting more and more dangerous (riots in France, UK, Copenhagen you name it, this is a new thing) Swiss cities might be safe, but its a place where you do not want to live if you have a decent live somewhere else.

I think if you put it differently more might agree with you.
You have brought up a good point: how many people are willing to admit money is a big draw to be here, notwithstanding the scenery, skiing etc.

Maybe it seems that many are here for that reason, I detect a bit of a personal complex here with money.

In my situation, I took an almost 5 fold pay cut to come work in Switzerland. Now money has never been an issue for me, I came because here I had the best opportunity to hopefully make a positive contribution to global life in general

Total nonsense, the money here is no better than anywhere else (when factoring in living costs).

The quality of life is, however.

Pity that you seem to be unable to appreciate this simple fact.

This is essentially the debate, and is weighted by quality of living factors which can per personal and cultural. I have Irish friends who'd prefer to earn less but have a better social life back home. What interests me is to what extent are some people here for the opportunity to save and build up a pension relatively quickly and live very cheaply? Especially if they don't have a comparable earnings potential at home (due to education etc).

Answers to this question vary, depending on your country of origin and what you are looking to gain. For example: I am from the states and I have found there isnt anything great about living in Switzerland. But other people will disagree. Here is my personal list of comparison.

Salary: I am in the medical field, my salary here is around 10% less than in the US.

Food: I am a true fatty girl at heart and I hate the price of food and the variety in Switzerland. I come from a place abundance in different cuisines and has food prices that are at least 2-3 times cheaper, so I struggle with my cravings almost everyday. Some nights I cry, true story.

Public transportation: I didnt think I can afford a car here so I opted to make use of the great transportation system like many people living here. The thing is, I hate public transportation. I didnt know I hate it until I have to use it everyday. I hate waiting for the bus/train/tram while inhaling 2nd hand smoke. Although I do like that everything runs on time and is pretty reliable.

Shopping: probably only females can truely appreciate this topic. The sales/variety/price for quality/online shopping here SUCK.

Anything I can find here, I can find in the US, or even more and better. I moved here for a job to get experience in my field. It is my priority at the moment so I am focusing on that.
Your list of comparison might differ from mine and others`. If you are thinking about moving here, you should first think about the priorities in your life and what you could achieve here.

Best of luck!
indeed. food is a major issue for me too. i am fine with public transport, since i am used to it from where i came from. but i REALLY HATE inhaling second hand smoke while waiting for it. that is like the most horrible thing ever, like someone is forcing cancer upon you. anyway, i also find the city to be quite dirty, really not what i expected at all. the floor in most part of the city is dirty, with chewing gum stuck on the floor, and eventually become part of it. and the graffiti too. i saw a newly painted building, and the next day someone had painted some graffiti over it.

I KNOWWWW right?? I work in the radiation oncology field so I am totally disgusted by 2nd hand smoke. I didnt expect to see graffiti here lol. They kind of remind me of NYC because I usually see them while riding the train, but NYC`s graffiti are nicer?

The quality of life is inferior here. As you don't have as many options as other countries in terms of products, stores, opening hours etc. and for the option you do have, you pay a premium on it. You may talk about the mountains etc. but not everybody is an outdoorsy mountain person. A modern society should offer me all the option I may would want..that's why this is considered a developed country...but only so on paper if I may add.

Re: Whats so great about living in Zurich ?

If there were a Merit Badge for living in one of the most expensive cities in the world, you could say you've earned it...

In all seriousness, most people I've talked to that have come to Zurich have followed their careers. Most of the cultural things I have encountered in my few weeks here have more to do with coming to Switzerland in general than coming to Zurich specifically. If the job wasn't here, I would probably have chosen to live in another city/canton, if only for cost-of-living reasons. Switzerland is small enough geographically that one could easily visit any region from any other region in a practical amount of time.

Re: Whats so great about living in Zurich ?

Well, this thread was meant to be about Zurich, but the Switzerland lovers turned up to groan and contradict. If you look at where they live, it tends to be ... not Zurich.

For example, I live in Basel and once I got over the shock (took around 2 months - but then I did arrive mid January and have never been into Winter sports) I now love it here. For a while. Although that "while" keeps extending.
