Whats so great about living in Zurich ?

Hi,

Zurich has alot of charm and beauty and I really would love to live there but I really want to know what the day in day out life is really like and why people decide to leave their country to live there.

What kind of things does it offer you that you couldn't get in other countries ?

Aside from the beauty of it all, and the fact that it's a great experience and very different from home.. what deeper things does it offer you ?

Do you feel that it's a much better place to raise your kids than home ? and if so, why ?

Thank you for any input!

It offers lack of variety and I cant get that where Im from

Zurich isnt ideal for raising kids but most cities arent. Cities like Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Valencia, Madrid, etc etc are very child friendly. In Zurich you "get Swissed" quite often when your a parent with a stroller. Its a stressful place to have smaller kids. We live between Oz the Caymans and spend summers in CH. I also go to Spain once a month for work.

I get to compare the good and the bad. Zurich would be the last place in the world I would choose to raise a family. All of our friend struggle financially (these are not poor people) and mom cant stay at home with the kids. She must work in order to maintain her quality of life.

I have the opposite experience - I find Zurich full of the necessary amenities for kids and families plus the school system seems to be geared more sensibly than much of the rest of the country, especially out in the sticks.

I work to maintain my quality of life but that quality isn't necessarily financially-based. I work because need to keep my brain active and I find the business / international opportunities good here in Zurich.

I've never encountered any negative reaction to my pram when my son was little and we've never had a problem finding suitable and reliable daycare.

Oops!!! I should pass on this round, otherwise I might hint that the best for me were the cheapish flights home to buy all that I couldn't find there and enjoy my home scenery and remember what "deep" was!
But I'd better just say pass and sorry for not being more helpful!

Re: Whats so great about living in Zurich ?

To be honest there is nothing great about living in Zurich or in Switzerland for that matter. People are wasting their time here. There is nothing "deeper" besides the "beauty & Charm", " a great experience" and being "very different from home" etc. Try googling for Heaven or Paradise, they might offer something "deeper".

The best option for people here might be to consider going back to whichever "greater" country they came from.

Re: Whats so great about living in Zurich ?

I agree, there's nothing here more than money, things, superficial chats in luxury restaurants with people, locals or foreign, who have created false idols from magazines where show how dressed they are and telling you where you can buy the same wear, watch or whatever. And them dying to be like those celebrities.

If I had children I would prefer they grow up with more awake kids, with inner security, creativity and without shame of being whatever they want to be. In the end the money is boring, and here the stupid life of whatever you can buy will teach you that you will find yourself with 55 years old looking for relationships on internet and your kids unknown wax faces "me first thinking" schwazerdeutch speakears.

Regards

Actually, I was being sarcastic Pergolito although I can understand your point of view based on your personal experience here.

I wasn't sarcastic. And of course, it is my 'point of view', but I'm not talking about experience, is what my eyes see, my ears listen.

When you wrote "your points of view based on your personal experience" shows a rhetorical sentence pointing an individual opinion, when the fact is that what I say is what's happen phenomenologically and the magazine 20 min Friday is a material real socially distributed fact although many people here use to quote. One of the worst propaganda source of information and brainwashing magazines getting people doce in this supermarket life.

Regards

I think that is probably the most complimentary review 20 Minuten has ever had. I bet they've never been used in the same sentence as "phenomenologically".

Re: Whats so great about living in Zurich ?

Answers to this question vary, depending on your country of origin and what you are looking to gain. For example: I am from the states and I have found there isnt anything great about living in Switzerland. But other people will disagree. Here is my personal list of comparison.

Salary: I am in the medical field, my salary here is around 10% less than in the US.

Food: I am a true fatty girl at heart and I hate the price of food and the variety in Switzerland. I come from a place abundance in different cuisines and has food prices that are at least 2-3 times cheaper, so I struggle with my cravings almost everyday. Some nights I cry, true story.

Public transportation: I didnt think I can afford a car here so I opted to make use of the great transportation system like many people living here. The thing is, I hate public transportation. I didnt know I hate it until I have to use it everyday. I hate waiting for the bus/train/tram while inhaling 2nd hand smoke. Although I do like that everything runs on time and is pretty reliable.

Shopping: probably only females can truely appreciate this topic. The sales/variety/price for quality/online shopping here SUCK.

Anything I can find here, I can find in the US, or even more and better. I moved here for a job to get experience in my field. It is my priority at the moment so I am focusing on that.
Your list of comparison might differ from mine and others`. If you are thinking about moving here, you should first think about the priorities in your life and what you could achieve here.

Best of luck!

If you're single, make it 2 days, that will give you the night to enjoy.
Just a thought.

Lots.

Mainly, it keeps you out of Ticino.
