income needed to have a comfortable life in Zug/ surroundings

I would like to know what monthly income is needed to live a comfortable life in Zug; comfortable meaning being able to rent a family house or appartment, to eat and drink, to go out in the weekend (restaurant, pubs), put 1 child to school, 1 child to nursery, to drive a car, to use public transport etc.

And, what are the pros and cons of living in Switzerland for x amount of time with 2 small children. 1 stay at home parent.

A parent drinking? This is illegal in Switzerland at all times.

Re: income needed to have a comfortable life in Zug/ surroundings

Marije,

You will find it very difficult to get a straight answer to that question. I am considering moving to Zug (pending job offer) and have been asking the same question (2 adults + 2 kids). The forum members have been very helpful, but I'm not any smarter when it comes to the affordability of living in Zug. Some people say 120000 CHF will be sufficient for a normal, not luxurious life and some say that you'll need around 200000 CHF to ensure you can provide for your family. I have never seen such disparity in people's opinion. The best advice I can give you (based on what I've done): Get your current expenditure together (apartment, utility bills, car, food etc) and compare it against Swiss prices. You will know then, how much at a minimum you need. A good place to start:

Comparis.ch (for insurance, mobile and TV costs, car etc)
Leshop.ch (grocery, clothes, health and beauty etc)
homegate.ch (accommodation)

Hope that helps.

Michael.

Re: income needed to have a comfortable life in Zug/ surroundings

Hi,

The disparity probably comes from different people with different backgrounds living different lifestyles. It's like expecting the same answer from Prince Charles and Fred West - they both had properties in Gloucester - was there any similarity in their lifestyles ?? Ok, Ok i am being flippant...

While I am comfortable I still shop in H&M for my clothes and buy Migros value peas! For a friend of mine in Zug being down to her last 2000 chf's a month might make her feel uncomfortable and she thinks nothing of buying a 1000chf handbag or two each month!

My solution was to do my own research. Comparis will tell you the breakdown of tax on your salary, so set up a spreadsheet and start with this, then look on Homegate or Comparis for accomodation and nebenkosten and subract, then do this with comparis on Health insurance, personal insurance. Once you have the utmost essentials removed, take out electricity, phone, internet etc. (These are the kind of queries you can find actual answers to on here eg how much to heat a 3 bed apt etc).

Then visit the Migros/Aldi/Denner or whatever website and calculate a weekly shop.

Take an extra 20% off for unknown bills, work out travel expenses and if you have an amount left you are comfortable with - make the decision.

Otherwise the whole sentence is a bit vague for the existing posters really isn't it?

You have to do a bit of legwork????

Re: income needed to have a comfortable life in Zug/ surroundings

TLD's rule of thumb is as follows:

All depends on how much you're prepared to pay rent wise.

Monthly rent including parking and NK x 12 x 3 = Basic minimum you will need to get by ( No car, mainly public transport and you can't really put a child in a private school, the mother will do most of the nursery stuff )

Monthly rent including parking and NK x 12 x 4 = Above average living standards (you'll be able to get an average car that cost around 50k)

Monthly rent including parking and NK x 12 x 5 = Here you start getting into the terratory of luxury the more stuff you want to have the higher that multiplier goes.

e.g.
(Rent between CHF2500 - CHF3500)

Basic: Salary needed from CHF90k to CHF126k
Above Average: Salary needed from CHF120k to CHF168k
Luxury: Salary from CHF210k and above...

As noted, opinion varies greatly but I can give you a bit of an estimate based on what I pay on the western shores of Lake Zurich.
Apartment - 2600 CHF
Parking space - 180 CHF
Bi-lingual tuition for 5yo - 1900 CHF
(No idea of day care, but I understand it's in the range of 2k CHF)
Car - bought used - 10 years old. 10k CHF with 1,000 CHF insurance for the year
Health insurance will run about 800 CHF per month
Eating out, even at the most basic pizza place, can be painful. I once paid 45 CHF for a burger and drink for me and a kiddie meal for my daughter.
Drinks - I buy wine in Germany for 4 EUR per bottle.
Groceries - I spend about 600 CHF per month but that's only because I have a 5yo who doesn't eat much and a husband who gets fed really well at the office. And I have my cheap wine and bagels. Most with 2 kids spend 1000 or much more per month, depending on age and tastes.
Monthly pass for 3 zones in Zurich (for public transport) is 190 CHF.

Soo, if you add 2600 + 180 + 1900 + (2000?) + 90 + 800 + 1000 = 8570 CHF per month. I think Zug is considered a bit more expensive than Zurich so YMMV, especially where rent and school tuition is concerned.

A drinking parent and the Brazilian dollars sound reasonable. Thanks for the last few postings though. Will start doing my homework straight away.

Maybe meet you Again on the forum. Should have introduced myself really, sorry for that.

Cheers.

Re: income needed to have a comfortable life in Zug/ surroundings

Yes, especially after a hard day I feel like deleting this kind of Thread in total frustration - till I remember going to England to live and literally not knowing whether a pint of milk would cost ten pence or a pound! And I didn't know where to buy it either. At that time everyone had their milk delivered so it was not sold at the village grocer's store. I found out, probably after trying the bakers, the electrical shop, the greengrocer's and the ironmongers that the newsagent always had a couple of pints to sell to folk who had run out of milk that day.

After this has gone through my mind, I get all sympathetic towards new members who ask basic asked-three-hundred-times-already questions and perhaps even give them a link to a useful Thread.

60K/year works for your average Zuger.

I knew someone on 250-300k in Zug and wouldn't have called it luxurious. 15k take home per month, 3000 rent. Although there was alot of wine being drunk.
