It may be a re-post but yes, you're right. I remember that happening now. Awful that the guys would do that to start off with but amusing how they're dealt with.

My dad made a comment once about gays, and I like it. It was along the lines of "I personally find the idea of being gay totally disgusting. To imagine two men or women together makes me cringe. But who am I or anybody to dictate their rights? It's not my business what they do in private nor is it theirs what I do. We are all entitled to the same rights - marriage or anything else. I don't have to personally like the idea but I have to respect it."

A. Mazing.
My friend used to go out with this Turkish guy who was really homophobic and they went to an 80s night one time. He decided to dress as George Michael. He didn't know George Michael was gay (I know... WTF?). Anyway, someone told him at some point during the night and he went home to get out of the clothes because he felt disgusting wearing them.

I guess after living in San Francisco for so many years Im used to hearing the complete opposite argument. Infact I cant understand why you are ranting. Your boyfriend dresses up as a woman...... Period....
In San Fran people rant about the opposite. "My shorts were too short at the gym so I got picked up on non-stop today (by men)".... "I wore a pink shirt today and some one followed me into Sliders offering to buy me dinner"..... "I dressed too nice for a bar on Polk st last night and everyone swore I was a closet homo".....
SF has a major problem with Man-on-man rape. When I was in college they used to have these raunchy posters in the Castro telling men to "stop dressing slutty or expect to get raped".
So honestly, your rant is awkward. 100% of homophobes have never actually met a gay person for more than 10 seconds. And the only gay people they do know of are potentially some "bitchy-fag" hollywood actor they see on TV that 95% of gay people even cant stand.
But if your man had dressed like that in the Bay Area he would have garnered just as much attention. I dont think its a "Swiss issue", as you imply.

If you read the first post (or even the title), you would see that I didn't imply anything, I asked a question. I then added that I'd not seen behaviour like this in the UK (although the video posted by both Ouchboy and flow23 obviously prove that it exists). So no assumptions made, just questions asked and observations.
Also, men who rape men aren't necessarily gay. Rape is a different subject altogether.
Finally, I didn't rant. You would know it if I did! |

Erm? Your first post today actually implied that Switzerland was worse than Spain and then the UK (The hate crime capital of Europe!)...... What I was trying to say is that there are other sides to the coin. Even a "tolerant" place like SF can create problems for men who keep dressing up like women. | Quote: | | | | | If you read the first post (or even the title), you would see that I didn't imply anything, I asked a question. It didn't imply anything. I spoke about what someone else told me about their experiences in Spain and didn't even mention the UK in my first post.
You are of course right when you say there are two sides to every coin.

| | Re: Is homophobia still an issue in Switzerland?
Homophobia in the capital has been in the news recently, not least in connection to the gay couple thrown out of a pub for kissing. Although this attracted much attention, the story behind the story has been largely overlooked. "The intolerance of gay kissing was actually part of a trend," says Paul Shetler, the gay-rights campaigner who organised the subsequent kiss-in protest. "The previous week, two other same-sex couples were unfairly barred from pubs. And an anti-gay sticker campaign has been ongoing in east London for some time. The kiss-in was our way of taking a stand against burgeoning homophobia in London."
To some extent, the statistics support his fears. Although homophobic crime overall dropped by 3% in London last year, in the West End it increased by 20.9%. This is symbolised, perhaps, by the fatal homophobic attack on Ian Baynham in 2009, minutes from where Sallon was assaulted. Last January, Ruby Thomas, 19, was sentenced to seven years for the crime. (By a strange coincidence, she was defended by Sallon's cousin, Christopher Sallon QC.)
When these are added to other assaults, such as the homophobic murder of Jody Dobrowski in 2005, and the stabbing of the 20-year-old gay student Oliver Hemsley in Hackney in 2008 – which left him paralysed – an impression emerges of a trend that is at once shocking and insidious.
"The majority of homophobic attacks are never reported," says the gay-rights campaigner Peter Tatchell. "Low-level assaults could easily be multiplying under the radar. It can be even worse for prominent gay figures like Philip. I myself have been attacked more than 300 times in the past 20 years. As a result [of an attack by neo-Nazis in Moscow], I suffer from permanent brain damage."
According to Sam Dick, a researcher for the gay-rights charity Stonewall, perceptions of London as a "gay-friendly city" are incorrect. "Studies indicate that gay people feel more vulnerable in London than elsewhere in the country," he says. "The attack on Philip Sallon – whether homophobic or not – can only make matters worse."
Quote above from the Guardian 2nd May 2011. Sadly, homophobic attacks are still very common in the UK too.

It's no different from anywhere else, just as homophobic and racist as any other country.
I have gay friends in Basel and Lausanne that have never had an issue. The Swiss are phobic to non-Swiss more than sexuality.
