Is homophobia still an issue in Switzerland?

I would hardly desribe Switzerland as the most progressive country in the world, but there was an incident this weekend which surprised me.

My boyfriend came out to the Fête des Vendanges wearing a dress, make-up, heels etc (he has embraced the British love of fancy dress). Most people laughed, but one guy who was about 20 or so threw a lit cigarette at him and called him a f**. It doesn't make a jot of difference that he isn't gay, but I suppose the standard reaction to someone saying that to you is to correct them, which my boyfriend did (actually pointing out that I was his girlfriend). The guy wouldn't back off and kept saying what a disgusting f** he was, and in the end I couldn't control myself, told him to f*** off and gave him a couple of good, hard shoves. The guy looked extremely confused, like he didn't know what to do. I then had to stop my boyfriend going for him (hypocritical as that is).

It was weird, the guy was openly and aggressively homophobic, but so chivalrous as to not hit a girl, even when she's pushing him.

We were both genuinely shocked that someone would be so unabashedly homophobic. I realise it's just one individual, but is the attitude something which is common here?

Re: Is homophobia still an issue in Switzerland?

I'd like to say homophobia is on the decline but...

a few years ago( 5-6 ? ) a dear friend of mine ( R.I.P.) took over the lease and operation of a small Hotel - Restaurant in Gandria ( on the lake just down from Lugano ) and while he didn't advertise it as a gay destination he did put up a rainbow flag... and did draw a number of gay clientele ( my friend himself was just ever so slightly camp darling )

The owner or the hotel tried to have the lease broken as my friend was ruining his( the owners ) reputation.

Fete des vendenges: crowds, drunk people, drunk nice folks and drunk jerks. Jerks act like jerks the world over. More so when they're full of wine.

I don't think it is a Swiss thing.

Dude was probably just jealous that your boyfriend looked better in fishnet than he does.

I can't say the story shocks me though.

It's no excuse but he was probably drunk, and in a situation like Fête des vendanges, with so many people, probably thought he could get away with being such a tool.

I don't think the situation is any different to how it is in the UK though - it just depends where you go.

ps hope he didn't ruin your evening too much

Re: Is homophobia still an issue in Switzerland?

I can't say that I've noticed it any more here than in any of the other country I've lived in.

There are homophobes the world over. I don't think it's any more or less prevalent here than any where else.

As Mud said you were in a particular environment at a particular time with lots of alcohol involved so I don't think it's representative of the Swiss in general.

Re: Is homophobia still an issue in Switzerland?

I don't think it is particularly Swiss, but unfortunately I know of a close friend who's life was negatively affected by lack of tolerance towards homosexuality so much she had to leave. So, having a bit of an insight, the general feel is pc and accepting and might seem as openminded as elsewhere but personally living it can be a whole different story. I do think it's still boonies somewhat.

On the other hand, I do have a gay friend according to whom Geneva is the "the most fruit town on earth" and he loves to come here and party, so...

Re: Is homophobia still an issue in Switzerland?

Of course it's still an issue. I don't think you'd get such blatant displays of it outside the sticks and when alcohol wasn't involved, but you can be sure people are thinking it.

Hell, even on this forum every once in a while you'll have a thread dealing with issues like gay rights and long-standing posters, who are perfectly reasonable about everything else, will post something ignorant (no sarcasm), only to dodge any questions about it afterwards.

Re: Is homophobia still an issue in Switzerland?

What a pity it spoilt your Fete des V. - but I am glad most agree it isn't 'just' a Swiss thing. Although up here in the mountains in traditional rural areas- homophobia in older people and a very small minority of youngsters (guess who they vote for/support?) is still very much alive.

I have a very good friend who is a cross dresser and has gender 'issues', and I often fear for him/her- but thank goodness he has never had any problems.

This thread is useless without pictures though xx

The man was confronted with his own demons and reacted in a childish way. Can happen in any country.

Re: Is homophobia still an issue in Switzerland?

Time for another poll?

The guy was drunk, so he lost it. He might be perfectly tolerant in everyday, sober life.
It’s the individuals who have to address their own, personal homophobic convictions. Is the homophobic beast still lurking and waiting to be released?
How many times have you heard: “Yes, I am tolerant, but why do they have to be so openly gay?"
As many people have said on this thread, it is still very much of an issue all over Europe.

Re: Is homophobia still an issue in Switzerland?

It's not a "Swiss thing". Idiots exist everywhere.

I was amazed to find out this weekend that my home country, homophobic as it is, has voted to allow homosexual marriage. At the same time, I have an idiot at work that keeps complaining about schwule and how annoying it is that they are taking over the city and seeing in horror the rest of the office nod in agreement to the "gay kissing should be banned from the public space".

So yeah, don't really dwell too much on it. You can't cure idiocy. Though sometimes I wish I could deliever some Bugs Bunny type of face slapping.

He probably wasn't homophobic at all. More than likely he was a part of an evolutionary cul de sac called Homo Moronicus. Or just generally phobic, as the Swiss can be. He probably has his nipple pierced, slams doors and hates his parents.
