Yah, I'll second that as I'm still walking funny after having to buy a pair here for a rather dear 1200 CHF. And that was with the 'cheap' frames.
I am not surprise that you walk funny... you have lost an arm and a leg

Re: What can you not live without from home?

If I were doing it all again, I would bring fewer "at home" clothes and more "finding a job" outfits - although I'd been promised some shopping before I came with my two suitcases, it hasn't happened (in no small part because of me choking on the prices of suitable clothing here).

I also would make arrangements with one of my siblings to keep me supplied with sugarless (not "sugar free" but the kind that instructions include adding sugar) Kool-Aid packets which were fantastic for adding a tiny bit of tart flavor to a bottle of water. I'd have started out with a goodly supply first though, for sure.

Everything else I've managed to either do without entirely or learned where to find / learned how to make suitable substitutions. (I think sewing may be next on my list of learning except that I've heard that making your own clothes here is just about as cost prohibitive as buying them in the first place)

Come on friends, so far we've got lots of nice-to-have things. None of them is something you cannot live without, as the title of the thread requires. I think there is nothing you really must have that you cannot find where autochthonous humans live.
True, but I have yet more helpful tips

So far, thanks to EF, I've managed to avoid a room scam (I think), got in touch with other students moving, had all sorts of tips about where to look for accommodation, what to expect when I arrive, seen peoples misconceptions etc. Incredibly helpful - I'm not sure what I would have done without EF

Great forum

Business proposition: purchase lots of flat sheets in the US. Stand in front of touristy hotels in summer. Profit.

(Also, make and sell cheap cups of coffee as side-business to flat-sheet black-market business)
Yes, yes, yes, and I would do it on a Sunday, as well!

Oh, wait, I am mixing this thread up with another.....

Re: What can you not live without from home?

I bring over vacuum cleaners!! I must admit that I've not had a look in the shops recently (ok a year or two) but here I could only find the ones you drag behind you and no upright ones. So I'm on my third now in 10 years, and my husband has bought the last 2 over with him as luggage.
