argh....vacuming at this time of night

I don't know if Im being unreasonable to complain about the people above us making noise yet again by hovering at 11pm.

Worse of all I don't know how to complain to them in German politely but assertively knowing they know NO English.

I hate this.....and the rose tinted glasses of living here seem to be slipping.

Re: argh....vacuming at this time of night

Did you get a copy of the "House Rules" with your rental contract? You could photocopy & highlight the relevant clause forbidding noise. Then tomorrow, knock on their door, smile sweetly, and deliver it.

I think you mean hoovering but in any case 11 pm is not okay.
You should send your Swiss partner to deal with the problem, just go knock on their door and tell them it is disturbing you.

Re: argh....vacuming at this time of night

Vacuuming past 10pm is a pet peeve of mine, and long has been, not only here but in the US as well. Partying on the weekend is one thing, vacuuming any night past 10 is something else entirely as there are plenty of other quieter ways of dealing with dust bunnies until such time as it is actually appropriate to run a vacuum! (Of course, if it is an emergency and we're talking about a shop vac sucking up a major leak that's heading toward flood status, that's something else entirely, but if that's happened more than once, there are bigger issues in play.)

I think you either should go up or send hubby / partner up to go and ask them to knock it off. Don't worry about being polite, don't worry about getting the language straight, not if you go as it is happening, they'll certainly know what the source of complaint is.

Ah yes hovering wouldn't be an issue but hoovering is :-)

House rules..... Will have to dig them out ...

Lovely Swiss partner.... Sleeping heavily doesn't like to complain and mumbled a German phrase to say to them .....trouble in paradise :-&

Edit....good news its stopped. Now I'm so wound up I can't sleep. Going to search for them rules and a nice big higlighter. And next time I see them I might set my scary labs onto them.

Re: argh....vacuming at this time of night

I vote for the following:

1. Get pruning shears from boiler room in cellar
2. Knock on neighbor's door
3. Enter flat and locate vacuum
4. This one's important...unplug said noisemaker
5. Cut the plug from the cord, hand 'em the plug and walk out.

Totally worth having to buy them a replacememt plug from Migro/Coop

Or you could bang on their door and when opened shout "FERTIG!!!!"

Oh, I guess I got that wrong then.

The one set of neighbors who really drove me bonkers with this were a mother -daughter pair who were toothpick sized but walked like elephants. So, not only were they constantly stomping around (walking heavy on the heels of their feet, regardless of shoe type) but they often did their vacuuming 10pm or so.

So, being the big angry cow I am, I went up and pounded on their door, and told them to knock it the f off.

I think it was less than a month later they moved out, replaced by the nice group of guys I mentioned in another thread earlier today.

This reminds me of something that happened to us in Japan, our neighbour left his dog out all night, every night, and it barked all night. We complained to the property manager and that did nothing. I managed to get the family's home phone number and we called them, in the middle of the night, to complain. Their house was so large, with their bedroom being on the opposite side of where the dog was, they claimed they could not hear the dog. But when we called, they could hear it through the phone. The neighbour was angry because he said he had been sleeping. We told him we would like to be as well. Eventually they moved.

If you neighbours are Swiss they should know the rules. Ask your Swiss partner to speak to them tomorrow and see if there was some emergency that required using the vacuum so late.

Re: argh....vacuming at this time of night

The thing is I feel pretty ridiculous complaining about this.......its just seems so silly for them to think its ok. Plus these guys are retired. I wouldn't normally moan but I have family here they've insisted on me dragging them to RIGI.

Re: argh....vacuming at this time of night

I would try to let it slide this once, but if it happens again then I would definitely say something. I once broke a glass on my kitchen floor around 11 at night. It shattered into a million pieces and that was the one time that I vacuumed past 10 PM.

Of course, though, if it sounds like they're vacuuming their entire apartment and it's keeping you from getting proper sleep (especially if you have to work tomorrow), then I'd be tempted to go up there, too...

ya, no vacuuming between 10:00pm and 7:00am, nor between 12:00pm and 1:30pm, nor on Sundays.

It's not a law. It's a your house rules thing. I've never had any mention of vacuuming or doing laundry in my own apartment mentioned in the house rules. Only things like not making excessive noise during certain hours.

Shops closed on Sunday is a law thing.

Here's an interesting link on what you can and can't do in your apartment as far as noise is concerned (sorry, in German)

I tried to translate this with the online translators. It's basically incomprehensible. Do you have a good translation, another language version of this, and/or a summary?
