What did you want to be ?

When you were a kid, what did you dream of being when you grew up ?

I wanted to be an archeologist and spend my life on digs in far away places.

Wanted to be a vet too. Even had a conditional offer from RVC. Ballsed up my A-levels though.

Re: What did you want to be ?

When moving out from my parents' home, I found a piece of work I'd done at the age of eight saying I wanted to be a children's TV presenter 'in the broom cupboard'.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11fWYOLmQns

Apart from that, I wanted to be a teacher... initially a modern languages teacher which lasted until my GCSE Spanish teacher had a nervous breakdown and I realised that secondary school children can be very cruel to teachers as well as their fellow students.

So I switched to primary teaching as a goal... and ended up, not having a nervous breakdown exactly but three successive years of extended depression-related absences.

Hummm... not sure what that says about my ability to select reasonable goals for my life...

Re: What did you want to be ?

I wanted to be:

when I was 5: a ballet dancer (unfortunate about my huge flat feet)
when I was 10: a vet (until I realised that you also have to give animals injections rather than just stroke them)
when I was 12: a pilot (because it seemed cool - I had never flown anywhere at that point)
when I was 16: an architect - my first serious job wish - screwed up physics and Engineering drawing at O Level and advised to give this up
when I was 18/19/20: a maths teacher (as I couldn't think of anything else to do with the maths degree that I was studying for)

Ended up as: first job: a statistician, then moved on to "doing various shit in IT."

The one I really regret is the architect - I wish I had retaken my exams and stuck with my wish because I think I would have really liked it.

Occasionally I wonder if I wouldn't have made a good teacher - because I am so thrilled when I can explain something about maths to my kids and they look at me with that amazement in their eyes.

Cool thread Sky

Up until about the age of 10, a ballet dancer or a pediatrician. Then I discovered art and wanted to do something in that field.
I still have a great passion for art so I will definitely study something in the near future as I was actually never able to follow that dream.

Re: What did you want to be ?

I can't think of a better way to celebrate my 100th post (I am of course referring to my last post BTW - now I'm a centurion, well 101 for the record ).

'Nice one centurion, like it, like it..........' (but that's probably another thread ).

Re: What did you want to be ?

Not sure what I wanted to be. But very sure about what I didn't want -
getting married, having kids and being a teacher.

Got married at 20, first child at 22, second a 25. Teacher training at 29, teacher at 32. Life is funny, innit?

Re: What did you want to be ?

When I was four, I wanted to be a vet.

As a nerdy teenager with an Oric-1, I toyed with the idea of going "into computers" (which would have meant working for Compower - the National Coal Board's computer centre in Cannock ). Then I thought about becoming a farmer, but the somewhat malodorous experience of working on a pig farm put paid to that.

I applied for a job with Kerrang magazine (still have the rejection letter somewhere), tried to get into retail management (I was "overqualified" - miserable gits!), tried again to get into computers, eventually moved to Greece and ended up as a teacher, which suited me right down to the ground, getting paid to talk rubbish all day, tell stories about crocodiles and have long holidays...

As you can see, I planned it all from the start...

Re: What did you want to be ?

I wanted to be... a teacher. When I was 5 I would sit my dolls and bears at desks and teach them about stuff. A blackboard and chalk was all I wanted to have fun.

Re: What did you want to be ?

I always wanted to be a soldier.
Then I applied for the officers academy and they discovered my shoulder joint suffered from "hypermobility" WTF!?

Now I'm almost finished with my Electronics degree, and glad I made that choice instead of returning from Afghanistan with PTSS
