Witnessed police raid twice in 2 days

I've been in Switzerland for quite over a month and I have never seen a Swiss police officer. I didn't know what they looked like until two days ago.

I was strolling through Platzspitz, behind the Landesmuseum in Zürich in the afternoon when a police van appeared, five policemen (and women) came out and approached a group of 4 or 5 people sitting beside the river. They started to talk to them and then proceeded to body searches. Afterwards no idea what happened because I left...

Today, I was strolling through Platzspitz again, around the same time, when suddenly an identical (or maybe the same) police van appeared, five policemen (and women) came out and started talking to two people sitting on a bench. Then they took one of them in the van, the other remained sitting on the bench, and took off.

I have no intention on meddling with police affairs, but witnessing such a scene twice in two days was pretty intriguing. Anyone has any idea what it might have been about? Drug sellers? Illegal immigrants? Someone tipped the police off about their whereabouts?

They were wearing loud shirts in a built up area, or possibly walking on the cracks between the pavements. Glad to see the cops getting on top of scum like that.

Maybe Platzspitz has returned to it's former glory?

If they take one of them with them in the van, he must have been loitering with intent to use a pedestrian crossing.

Platzspitz used to be a terrible drug scene, the whole area around the back of Hauptbahnhof was unsafe, they cleaned it up but lately I have been seeing people from the drug user community there again, this may explain the police force.

It's one of the side effects of a low crime society. Very bored Police.

Keep away from Platzspitz!

We once saw 2 people roughing up a man in Bern around 6pm on a Saturday, our thought was "Shall we call the police?" Then we realised they were the police!
Ahh the policing style of "Gene Hunt."

Great to know the taxes are going to good use.

Why the GROAN Mr Lemons?

The police were trying to control a rioter that had probably just been kicking in the SBB windows at the Bern station. He deserved the roughing up. I thought our reaction amusing: we realised our mistake when we turned a corner and found about 100 police in riot gear, prison wagons ready for their customers.

It does pay to keep up with what's going on in your local town. This event slipped passed our notice.

True.

According to our local paper we've had an outbreak of graffiti in our town. We're already clearing out our bomb shelter so we've got somewhere to go when civilisation collapses...

Re: Witnessed police raid twice in 2 days

Possibly the groan was because Bern and Platzspitz are quite a train journey apart?

Re: Witnessed police raid twice in 2 days

I shouldn't worry too much, Ittigen. St2lemans recently groaned the Local for actually getting its facts right for a change.

It's how they demonstrate their love down in the Tessin, apparently...

That link was fascinating. I find the Zurich/Switzerland heroin epidemic fascinating, that the swiss would freak out like that??

Re: Witnessed police raid twice in 2 days

Did you see the pictures? It was a mess.

And I remember clearly that I was told never to go anywhere near the back of the train station because of the druggies. There were also people begging for money to buy drugs.

drugs are probably the main reason cops do any work here...well, besides the traffic cops...they have good business...not much other crime, oh, well getting people to be quiet after 1:00 AM....

Crikey. They could just arrest someone on suspicion, rather than getting all Syria.
