In defence of the OP, it is possible that he comes from a social background in which he has never had to post a letter himself. It isn't impossible.

I've never had to slaughter my own lamb or throw my own dinner party before, so I'd probably want to ask what to do. Horses for courses, and all that.

I think the rest of the answers he has received cover the practicalities, though.

Personally i thought i did a good job of finding a spiderman picture which summed up my thoughts of this thread but more importantly showed spiderman outside what could be a Swiss post office. It took me a while to find!

Then i get a 'groan' for my efforts, even though the second post (by Carlos R) got a 'thanks' from the OP even though i could smell the sarcasm through my computer.

(the 'thanks' has since been removed by the OP)

cheers

The right answer in German to this kind of postings is: "Heul doch!"

Nice, it's free. Just put the letter in the envelope and put it in one of the yellow postboxes you'll find all over zürich.

PP explanation
But don't forget to write the address on the envelope...

That's because I gave him two tips, which are both valid
1) that he might find the help he needs at a post office
2) that there might be one in Geneva

I challenge you to find any inaccuracy in my post.

You can use the yellow post boxes, but you will need to get a stamp from the post office first. There used to be machines, but as posted above die Post got rid of them

Re: How to post a letter???

This is why people are put off EF. People falling over themselves to see who can attack the newbie first.

So it seems like a silly question. You know what? Some people don't know some simple things. That's life. Not everyone is as brilliant as you. Either give a respectful answer or ignore it and move on.

Feel free to groan Mirfield. I won't hold it against you... much...

Could they maybe have asked a work colleague, neighbour, heck a random person on the street?

IMHO if you don't know that, I just wonder how someone could have made it to CH. As UTH said, they managed to get on-line to post on EF. With that in mind, they could have Googled "Post letter switzerland". (FTW try it and click the first link.)

While, yes it is bad of me to provide the help (as) I did, this also comes back to the same old chestnut of "have you at least tried to look or are you being really lazy or are you a troll?" conundrum.

What the hey. Maybe a mod (are there any left?) can now create a sticky on this one for future users.

It may seem silly, but having had a postal adventure myself when I cam from India first time, I can somewhat empathise with the OP. So, for most of you, writing the address seems like a trivial matter, so it was for me too, until....

Well, where I come from, I was used to writing the sender's address at the bottom right corner of the front face, and clearly label it "From".
The To- address would be in big font, usually upper case, in the centre of the front face, clearly labelled "To"

That's what I did for my first letter, I remember it was for my landlord in Ticino. I posted it from the post office not 200m from my office in Zurich. Next day I promptly received the letter in my office mail

They could have asked those people, or they could ask a website that purports to help people in Switzerland. I see no crime in that.

Re: How to post a letter???

I'm not going to lie, I love harrassing OPs with simple questions when the opportunity arises.

However, when I first came to Switzerland, I really had no clue on this topic and definitely asked a few people how it went as well.

For me it falls under the same topic as:

How do you answer the phone here? (Stating your last name instead of hello)

Where do you buy alcohol? (at almost any store, not exclusively at the government controlled beer/liquor store).

Where can you buy cigarettes? (at almost any store, not just the tabac)

Hope you got your answer OP. In a new country sometimes the most trivial things are very confusing and asking a random on the street might get uncomfortable belittlement (especially in CH). The semi-anonymous forum is best for this!

Hi,
I have arrived in zurich just a month ago. Now, I have received a letter from Stadt Zurich. It is a form and I signed it but I don't know how i can post it to the address?? I mean should i use some stamp? and where to hand in the letter??
If you are older than 12 and still don't know how to post a letter, then it is maybe too late for you.

At one of our big post office they have numbers AND letters! It's a bit like playing bingo

And when they call your number you have to run to find your letter as well before they decide to skip you and call the next one!

Re: How to post a letter???

I remember when I was 13, I had school trips both to Interlaken and Paris - and in both locations I was able to buy postcards, stamps and find a postbox in which to post them .... all by my self.

I also, from the late '80's worked in a few different foreign locations (not high-powered positions with relocation agents to wipe my arse), and was able to find my way around - without the internet in general, and help forums in particular - by asking and applying a bit of common sense and logical thinking.

I think anyone qualified, and accepted, to come to study at the ETH, should at least have a basic level of intelligence and self reliance, which - one would like to think - includes being able to send a letter. I'm sure a postal service exists in Iran.

Looking at the threads of the OP, one could be forgiven for getting the impression of someone who possibly comes from a privileged background (within their own country) and may be a little unused to having to do things for themselves on a basic day to day level.

Generalising .... yes; newbie bashing .... possibly - but not just for the sake of it; fed up with dumb ass questions from those not capable of working out the mundane side of life for themselves .......

...... definitely.

I am thinking - as much as I really NOT rather make myself feel any older a week or so before my 42nd birthday - that Ouchboy maybe hit it on the head a bit with this:

I ws thinking about this one, it could be that it isn't even a social background but merely a gnerational issue. Kids these days probably don't know how to do it either (though they can google it I guess)
I haven't had to mail a single item since I arrived here four years ago. Retrieved from post office yes, mailed out myself, no.

I communicate with friends and family either by email, facebook, telephone or a VOIP like Skype or ventrillo, no need for snail mail. (I really should be mailing some packages though, no one should miss out on Basler Leckerli ) So I can see how someone may not know "how" to do it, particularly if they never needed to do it "back home" either.
