I hardly meet Swiss people when I travel...and I visit notable events on a yearly basis. Now, it's my word against yours, what do we do...duke it out?
Perhaps they don't hang about in the same places as you, or they don't go to 'notable events', whatever they are?

However, as I said, I've met loads of Swiss and hardly any Americans whilst travelling.

If as you suggest, more Americans travel (as a percentage of population), then I ought to see many, many more Americans than Swiss as it's got a far bigger population.

The majority of Americans don't have a passport and have never been out of their country. But obviously if you compare a population of 300,000 million with a population of 7million then things aren't going to show a true picture.
