So far I've never issued a groan, not even to post(er)s who literally made me throw up. Do you really mean I have to break with this tradition of mine to be allowed to stay in my own country?
As your profile says you live in switzerland AND the US, you are exempt from the poll. Please move along now.

Re: London 10 - Zurich 0

ahah, I can`t agree 100% as I know quite a few very nice Swiss. Men and women, couples and singles. But certainly coming from Milan and having lived 4 years in central London I see where you are coming from. Leggings and LV, pretending they are posh and they have no clue, swissness, mountain focus ...ahaha, genius, all so true and funny. Not criticing, just stating facts.

But keep looking and go beyond appearances, once you get to their heart, or close to it, you will see many Swiss are just sweet lovey people. :-)

Enjoy and btw, BA has great cheap flights to London, pop there more often to top up, as I do ;-))

That's a pretty accurate description of Switzerland.

Re: London 10 - Zurich 0

The basis of this posting is a fairly pointless. If you have decided to come and live in another land but then turn around and point out why its less good then another land that you clearly think is better, then you are better off going back to where you come from.

Switzerland is not England and Zurich is not London. The people have different value sets and cultural backgrounds. Generalisations that all swiss are rude when you are comparing Zurich to london is pretty bold when Zurich has about 30% foreign citizens, chances are that rude man who pushed in front of you is actually english and the sort who would be rude where ever they live.

Accept the place for what it offers, look at the positives and work with the system and you will enjoy it much more. There are faults and positives in all places but trying to suggest London score 10 positives to Zurich's 0 is crazy. I am sure we could easily list 10 alternate positives for Zurich where London scores 0. Not planning to list them as others will merely try to shoot them down. However an obvious one is that the place doesn't fall apart as soon as there is a few snow flakes where London is full of people willing to blame others.

Re: London 10 - Zurich 0

Hi

I absolutely LOVE London and I miss it (having studied and living there for years). Nevertheless, to be fair towards Zurich, I came up with some points as well where London is not exactly perfect....
  1. You have to queue for hours for whatever you need.
  2. You are on the phone nonstop with banks, insurances, etc. for simple questions and at the end; you did not get your answer/request solved because they have to stick to their handbook.
  3. You get reverted to 100 different places and people in order to get a simple information (no matter which one). You hit the jackpot if you got it.
  4. Going somewhere takes ages and tubes/railway are always late.
  5. At night, you always must fear to get mobbed or robbed.
  6. Going to a doctor is a nightmare (alone the wait) and you are not being consulted properly by him/her afterwards. Actually, you are better off consulting the internet.
  7. The little drizzle rain, which is SO often in London, just drives you nuts and ruins your hair but people look at you funny if you hold an umbrella (which doesn’t help either).
  8. Cheeses, bread and cold cuts are not tasty at all. If you want something good you need to go to specialty shops which brings me back to point number 4

Re: London 10 - Zurich 0

All funny stuff, but not to be taken too seriously!

I have lived here 11 years now (from England) and started off with thinking the UK had gone to the dogs and Switzerland is perfect. The rose-tinted glasses have long gone.. The UK hasn't gone to the dogs (in fact I am very nostalgic about the place now, and love going back!), Switzerland isn't perfect; neither is any other country.

Try spending a month or two in Songo (remote part of Mozabique) for a twist on reality - for added fun, have a head-on car crash too, in a 20yr old toyota pickup with no seatbelt ;-)

Funny, we were in London last week, looking for something to eat at a food market just behind the London Eye.. Fish 'n' Chips, etc., all available, but I really lusted after a plate of boiled potatoes with Raclette cheese and a warm glüwein :-)

My summary scores (total being six): Switzerland=3+3, UK=2×3, Germany=4+2, France=1+5, Spain=7-1....

[Major annoyances from Switzerland come mainly from expats - two examples:
No steak pies.. Make them yourself! I do and they are fantastic
No fish and chips.. Make them yourself - I do, with Rothaus bier-batter and the Aargauer Zeitung!

And for some of the Swiss I have met in past years - Scotland is NOT bloody utopia!]

En gueta,
Chris

As opposed to try to queue whilst everyone pushes in front of you?

Re: London 10 - Zurich 0

I think there's plenty of places which seem MUCH more fun when visiting than Zürich or Switzerland for that matter.
But what'd put me off London is
a) commute times,
b) crappy appartments & prices,
c) bad salaries except in finance,
d) and the omnipresent chav culture and everything that comes with it.

Re: London 10 - Zurich 0

To me this is always such a strange comparison - being born in London and growing up in South London - I do not miss it one bit and much prefer my life in Switzerland now - granted the first year here was tough but now I have no desire to live back in London. However, if I had a pound for every time I have been asked do I miss London or Zurich must be so boring I would be a millionaire by now!

After quite enough time spent in both cities, I smashed on the amazing truth that not all world is like Switzerland (fact which I almost forget when I spent too much time in this country):

1 Englishmen are gentlemen (they wait for women to enter a room first and so on) even under beer effect. Swiss men ignore any kind of politeness (they just mind their way others around would transparent) even though they just under Rivella effect.

2 English people have real humor (not like the swiss: "Italy? Ahahah, mafia!" ... thinking "Ok... and where is the fun?") and have fun in life (they joke and laugh without thinking this would make them less efficient in work or any other social situation). Swiss do not laugh (simply because they do not get jokes, besides not being able of creating one).

3 Though full of foreigners from all around the world, you'll never see any political campaign on posters picturing these strangers as black figures with just very bad intentions. The opposite, English people are even more polite when you look disoriented. From the other side, the swiss one, SVP is the 1 political party of the country...

4 English people have style, man and women keep updated with fashion though in a personalized way. Elegance and taste, creativity and perfect cut are daily bread for them. They do not wear outdoor clothes unless they go outdoor for outdoor activities. Swiss women feel sexy only in leggins and Louis Vuitton bag or outdoor clothes (even when they go the opera, I saw it personally). Swiss men feel sexy with... do they ever feel sexy??? Maybe that's way they just take anything from the closet with the light off.

5 London offers a huge range of art, exhibitions, museums, nightlife and the English can still be quite modest about it. In Zurich is almost embarrassing how poor is all mentioned before (last year Zurich was rated the 3rd most boring city of Europe, first was Brussels), still the Swiss are so proud of it like it would be the worldwide capital of fun.

6 London is huge and with the Olympic Games construction places traffic is even bigger. Still the English can manage and ORGANIZE everything to affect the least possible daily life. Zurich is very small (to be considered a town, not certainly a city) and the traffic is to compare to the rush hours of NY. Should I mention all the construction places for months and months with no Olympic Games coming soon?

7 English people are fun, have an healthy concept of privacy and do not judge just according to bank accounts: this means that when they get to know you they do not immediately ask you what kind of job you do, where and then if it's prestigious they keep talking to you, like some Swiss. If they bump into you they do not ignore they almost ripped a shoulder away from you and keep walking like you were just an annoying obstacle on their busy way. The English stop and say "sorry", but smiling and caring if you are still one piece. This happens even if London is 100 times busier and crowded as Zurich.

8 English can flirt and pretty good. Swiss can stay stiff but not in a good sense.

9 English are international. Swiss are mountain focused.

10 English are human beings and in case of default they laugh about it and go on. Swiss are like my laptop: they keep turning off because of invincible virus. And behind their eye pupils everything is silent, just a buzzing noise in the back gives some vital signs...maybe!
Personally speaking, being Scottish, I disagree with all of the above.
How could a French ally be so charitable to our old enemy?

However with Zurich there's still a chance that with the current crisis the chavs leave back to England and all gripes above are solved.

Ha ha, English, style, fashion? I think the Swiss, especially younger folk in Zurich, do consider fashion and style a lot....as long as it's black

Don't be daft.
Aside from the scores of independent deli's & bakeries across London, there's also a Sainsburys or Waitrose or M&S practically every 100m these days.

The myth of Britain=bad food died a long, long time ago - especially in London.
