Re: Bonfire Night....Fireworks night!!!

Someone told me that the Fish Inn in Reinach near Basel is doing something - it's an English Pub.

I'm not so interested in fireworks, but a bonfire and a guy on top would be nice. Can't believe that would be such a transgression in Switzerland.
You are aware that it is not just any guy up there, rather it is an effigy of Guy...

Does anything get celebrated for 5th November by any chance??

Fireworks night???

Alice

I will probably lead a little expedition to a fireplace on the Rhine in the Forest north of Rheinfelden on Sunday if you are interested, if the weather is too chilly that will mutate into old movies and junk food in my apartment there.

Ja, one or two days a year is enough in Switzerland ........ for the animal welfare as well.

Halloween is an American festival?

I do know that the Guy Fawkes festival is British, something to do with celebrating the blowing up (or the fail thereof) of the parliament buildings, is that correct?

But never mind, there is the ancient Celtic thingy of welcoming Winter - The Räebelichtli Umzug, to look forward to. Just a candle-lit brigade of small children with their carved Turnips, winding thru villages, singing old traditional songs. (While the parents drink beer in the village pubs)

Guido Fawkes attempted to blow up parliament during its annual openeing when most MP's and Lords would be present at in the building as part of a plot against the treatment of Roman Catholics by the Protestants. THe plot was cooked up in the Dutch city of Maastricht, laterly the place where a treaty with the other EU countries was signed, remembered by Eurosceptics as an almost treasonous transfer of authority from the British Crown

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot...
