| | really soft toilet paper - where to buy
Does anyone know if I can buy really good quality toilet paper in Zurich? Or do I have to bring TP from the US to get the great soft quality? Even Charmin here does not measure up to Charmin at home... it may seem frivolous to some people but I am really in search of better quality than what I can get in the regular stores... After having tried all the brands and prices - I'm still not getting anyway. Any tips?

If you can find it (very hard to come by, now) - Izal Medicated is what you seek.

Any tips? | | | | | Since you are American, I assume what you call "really good quality toilet paper" is the look-through stuff you grew up with, the one that needs at least eight sheets in order to prevent your fingers from getting in direct touch with you know what. Sorry, I'm afraid you have to go to a country like Greece to find it in Yoorup. But don't despair. Once you get used to what you find here, you'll never want to go back to that really good quality of yours.
My OH is American, and after getting used to the Old World system, she had the splendid idea of introducing her compatriots to our toilet paper. "We could make oodles by selling this paper in the USA," she said.
I said, "Forget it. All major European toilet paper factories belong to American companies anyway. Obviously their market surveys just tell them that Americans prefer to stick to their transparent variety."
There's another reason apart from mere being used to it, though. American toilet paper must comply with the decomposition requirements in septic systems. Since septic systems have been abolished in Switzerland and most of Europe generations ago, our paper can be thicker, hence safer without using half a roll for a single session.

What about using a Bidet / shower and a packet of rubber gloves if you are squeamish. Much more environmentally friendly.
Otherwise use cold cream after each visit on the "exit" and then you don't need as thick paper the next time.
Toilet paper is expensive enough for just the normal stuff in CH.

If we're going to get into wiping technique, I'll add my 2 cents.
My grandmother, who was a nurse, taught me to wipe my rear when I was a wee Mud. She would always judiciously fold 4 squares into one (Yank paper, mind you), that was for the initial pass, then with a few more 4 square-squares wet them to clean, and a final dry one to, well, dry. I had some serious conversations about butt cleaning with my Indian friend when I was in school here- he thought Westerners were dirty pigs with their dry wiped bottoms but I got a proper 'head bobble' of approval when describing Grandmother's technique. As they say the proof is in the pudding, and if the pudding is in the drawers yer doin' it wrong .
'Course us well off adults can afford baby wipes. Huggies Pure are highly recommended. I suppose I was indoctrinated at an early age, but 'cleaning' with dry tissue simply doesn't make sense.
For more advanced techniques I offer consultations for 120CHF/hour, 3 minute minimum. | This user would like to thank Mud for this useful post:

I get my TP from this place near the Tam Nong monastery up on a high mountain peak in Nepal. It is produced by virgins only using silk from black abino silkworms that were conceived every other leap year and preserved in the Royal observatory of Rahajmunda. Beats Cha-Cha-Cha-Charming any day I tell ya. | This user would like to thank lost_inbroad for this useful post:

For paper, Hakle Chamomile is the way to go, though normal Hakle is also good. I always get it on sale (1/2 price) at Denner.

If you happen to be travelling to Germany, look out for "Happy End" 5 ply TP or other brands. URL

This technique gives the effect of using skin soft paper, immaterial of what is actually used - and especially useful when caught short in the wilds.
I always carry one single sheet folded in half, then half again. When required I take said paper and tear of the corner where it is twice folded, so when opened there is a small hole in the middle. The piece torn off should not be discarded.
The second finger is now placed through the hole and wiping can proceed. The torn off piece can now be employed to clean the end of the finger, especially under the nail.
The sheet of paper should be unsoiled and can be used again - varying the position of the folds and where it is torn to create a new hole.

Has the EU run out of things to feel superior to the US on now and folks are making a run on TP? That light up ahead may just be the end of the internet....

It was exactly the same procedure, just a bit harder, so to say.
