Sexual Assault in Fribourg

I don't want to be alarmist, but thought I should let those of us in Fribourg know to be extra vigilent about personal safety.

We had the police visit us today to tell us that a woman was raped just up the road from us last night (approx 4am in Neuveville).

Now yes, I live in probably the most well known street in Fribourg - home to the local brothel - but have always regarded the area as pretty safe. In fact if anything I took comfort in the fact that there were always people (male and female) in the street at anytime of the night, and as a female had no qualms about walking down the street in the small hours.

However, couple this with the three muggings that took place in Neuveville during the last weekend of October (http://laliberte.ch/content/trois-ag...-vieille-ville), and it certainly makes you think.

As I said, I don't want to be alarmist and, compared to many places (in Switzerland and abroad), Fribourg is indeed a safe place to live. However sexual crime doesnt seem to be so well reported here, and so when I heard about it I really felt I needed to pass the new on.

So please, be safe out there.

Re: Sexual Assault in Fribourg

We're almost neighbours! During the week, I live on the other side of the bridge, in a lovely area, but close to the prison... A few weeks ago, around midnight, there was a group of 12-15 men in hoodies on the parking lot, right by the entrance, getting drunk and yelling. The inmates were flickering the lights in the cell (which is unusual) and the men outside went on shouting for almost 1/2 hour, until someone finally came out to make them leave.

Nothing bad happened, but I was glad that I didn't come home late that evening, as I would have felt quite uncomfortable having to walk past them to get home... It's the only time I've been remotely worried about my safety, but it made me be more aware of my surroundings. The jail is a relatively nice building (from the outside at least) and the rest of the area is so picturesque that I am/was lulled into a (false?) sense of security.

Re: Sexual Assault in Fribourg

Sorry to hear that.
Wasn't the assault on Sunday night? I'm asking because the police, in the very early Monday night, was very active. They even rang at a friend's house to ask for access in the garden with huge spotlights, saying they were looking for a 'burglar'. We didn't really believe the burglar story, but the assault would make more sense for the police action.

Unfortunately, hubby says that the inspectors definitely said "4am this morning" (Tuesday). So sounds like there is even more going on in the neighborhood than we hear about.

Was a little surprised that this sort of thing is never reported in the press here, especially as talking to a friend whose brother is a cop revealed that this happens (albeit domestic incidences) disturbingly frequently in Fribourg.

The area was very quiet when I walked home last night...with the business up the road equally quiet. And the sense of unease wasn't really helped by a bunch of streetlights being out!

Maybe you could figure out who to contact about getting the lights put on/replaced, (sorry I don't know), but light can go a long way to adding feelings of safety, and making crime difficult. Be safe!

Re: Sexual Assault in Fribourg

My flatmate was assaulted this evening getting out of the lift in our apartment building in Fribourg. I wonder if it's getting worse or just that we are hearing about it more.

You are hearing about it more...as media is slowly getting up to date with reporting crimes.

Re: Sexual Assault in Fribourg

I and two friends of mine live very close to here, never felt unsafe about walking past the local brothel but now I'll be much more cautious. Thanks for the heads up. Hope they catch whoever is responsible.

"inmates flickering the lights" ? Inmates usually cannot switch on or off the lights, so that it most likely was the prison personnel, and the "someone" most likely simply were policemen who first spoke with the prison personnel and then acted

and there apparently already in June was a certain incident there as reported under

That actually makes more sense if inmates can't control the lights in their rooms. I wonder why it took the police so long to act though...

I do not wonder at all, imagining the "stages"
- stage 1 : prison personnel to contact a superior at home
- stage 2 : that superior arriving at a decision
- stage 3 : prison personnel contacting police
- stage 4 : police mobilizing reserves
- stage 5 : police going to the prison
- stage 6 : policemen and prison staff having conference
- stage 7 : police finally moving into action

Hey Millso, hope your flatmate is OK! Did this happen INSIDE your building?
Have to say that, rather surprisingly, the streetlights were fixed in a matter of days. So things are feeling more comfortable again.

I agree with Millso. I am a news junkie and very really read about crimes in Fribourg in the media (local or national). The sexual assault never made it into the press. Yes, hearing a lot more through word-of-mouth, so I doubt that there is a massive new crime-wave sweeping the Canton of Cheese. But that is still of little comfort to those of us living amongst it.
