I was once sitting next to two women on an international flight. It was about 4 hours in when I listened hard to the language they were speaking and realized that it was actually somehow English.
Geordies?

This indeed We were in Cinque Terre recently- sandwiched in the train between a large and very loud group of Chinese tourists, and a similar size, similarly loud, group of Americans. The latter were going on and on and complaining bitterly about the Chinese tourists - OH and our Swiss friends (just the 4 of us) were killing ourselves laughing and it took all my strength not to stand up and not to say anything Mind you, same with Brits in the Bergerac, St Emilion, St Foy area of SW France this Summer- hardly a French person in sight and no-one making the faintest effort to speak French (and most there seemed to be residents, not tourists).
Not surprised at all...typically..human!

We always 'test' our Murican friends with the 'Angel's Share' (Ken Loach film) - not one has yet understood more than 2 words in a row

(just love that film)

Aye, fab movie indeed.

For anyone who has not heard of, or yet seen Sunshine on Leith, highly recommended movie (musical), more so if you're into The Proclaimers

When living in the US of A we watched a lot of PBS (basically because normal US telly is really irritating, so many commercials they were coming out yer jacksie, incredibly loud, obnoxious, just annoying in general). We found it hilarious that Monarch of The Glenn and Taggart were screened with subtitles

Actually, dad didn't really have an accent, just a slight burr. Unless he was reading the address to a haggis.

I find that American southern accents are completely unintelligible to most non-Americans. Of course we have them played to us on television and in movies from a young age so we understand them (but for the most part we think people who have them are morons).

It always amazed me in the Netherlands that Belgians talking got subtitles :P

Well for an Australian its easy. The Swiss just love Australia and Australians. And they always get the ball rolling by asking about all the dangerous animals in Australia. Yes Australia is indeed "The Lucky Country"

Don't take this sort of things for granted, omtatstat. They might "like" Australians in general, but if you act like a jerk they might hate you...in particular. I'm not saying you do. Easy with that love or hate thing, everybody is different.
