| | Maybe I'll be the first to ask... This year anyway!
Please don't groan but I am becoming some what weather obsessed. Often checking the forecast 3 times a day. The reason: my parents are coming on the 13th of December and are expecting switzerland to be a snowy winterwonderland and I am worrying we have no snow in sight! Soooo any predictions on when the snow (in the mittelands be/so) is likely to come? Last year, I think, we had the first snow on the 28th of November. Was that really unusually early? Sorry, I bet this gets asked every year and all you experienced EF members will be banging your heads on the table, but at least I am not asking questions about brown sugar or whether my salary is enough ;-)

You are not alone - many of us, including natives, are asking the very same question Around here (in the Jura) we are usually knee of chest deep by now.

I'm a bit obsessed too really - and I love snow as well
Here in the Basel region it's pretty unusual to get snow in November (even December) although last year we did - and even had a white Christmas which was my first ever (and yes, I behaved like a big kid running out to catch snowflakes on my tongue )
I usually satisfy my parents snow-wishes by taking them on daytrips to the mountains where there will certainly be snow in December.

I don't recall it being particularly snowy last year, merely sleet in the city at best.
I am more concerned snow hasnt fallen on the slopes :-(
But by the 13th there should be snow, in the mountains I mean, so take them to Arosa for some beauty

I think, due to a late booking, it's scheduled for the 19th Dec, this year (someone cocked up I believe).

Yeah, some of my German colleagues are pushing me to set a ski date, and don't seem to understand that we don't have any snow yet. ;( hopefully soon, that's about all I can say!

The first year we arrived (2008) the snow came very early - end of October, and was still on the ground at the end of February...
I have been told by locals in Zurich that it *can* get to Christmas without snow...
I too am waiting for the white (and the sun that usually arrives soon after).
But be assured, up there on the mountains, there will be snow and sunshine!
I'm guessing it's the prevailing background pattern - Australia has switched over from drought to flood, so I expect it to be a little dryer up here in Europe to balance it out... | This user would like to thank swisspea for this useful post:

I remember both years (this is my third year) here that the snow started to fall around the 30th November in Zuirch.
It's MUCH warmer on average this month compared to previous years, so I doubt that "that white shit" (quoting Nil from an old post) will be here any time soon.
I'm also extremely anxious about the snow.
I have mates arriving this weekend from Australia and they were pumped to go snowboarding somewhere....... tough luck huh?
Bring on the snow !!!!

There was snow on the ground this time last year in the city. I remember well because i almost broke my leg running through uncleared snowy streets in Basel for the Baselstadtlauf which is taking place tomorrow evening.
Im happy there is no snow as i'm hoping for a PB |

I'm living at 1400m and we still have no snow (40cm a few weeks back but it all melted the next day!). Nearby ski area was supposed to be opening tomorrow...!
Everyone here laughs at me cause I can't wait for it to snow, they say I'm like a child. Because after one day of snow everyone here seems to be sick of it already!! | This user would like to thank gnaula for this useful post:

This will be my first snow season here and I'll admit I've been loving the unusually warm weather.
If the snow season here is anything like the traumatic last two I suffered in northern Germany, just kill me now.

Coming from Auckland, New Zealand I am so not used to having tempertures in the single digits let alone the negative single digits.
This will be my first proper winter with snow in about 30 years.....am thinking of adopting the bear way of living...hibernating through the winter hehehe. I am lucky that I am heading back to NZ for Xmas....nothing like having a barbeque on Christmas days in shorts and jandals with sunshine....but I do have to come back.
Am looking forward to the snow and making snow angels and snow people hehehe. Will see how long that lasts lol.

Maybe there should be a yearly pole on the subject?
Who knows? I checked the iphone and weather underground predictions for the next week in Zurich and I don't think a single day matched!
