Yes that is certainly true but it still surprises me that in one on one situations most my colleagues seem to relax and open up quite a bit .
maybe the boss was around. which makes it hard to say "i got totally fit-shased!" or the team-member who quietly notes down everything you say to stab you in the back at a later date...

It's not just at the office that typical US/UK small talk seems to be a social faux pas.

Around the neighborhood such universal topics as the weather, compliments on the garden, the adorableness of the baby being pushed in the stroller are just not done.

Small talk is limited to 'Gruezi mitenand', a nod and a half-smile. Even 'Wie geht es Ihnen?' is an overly familiar question and could cause offense. 'How was your weekend' would be considered tantamount to stalking.

Took some getting used to...

(My weekend was delightful, thank you - we went to the Weihnachtsmarkt in Einsiedeln, just lovely. Oh yes, it's quite child-friendly - is your little one looking forward to Samichlaus' visit? By the way, I've been admiring your garden - how lucky you are that your roses are still in bloom. Gosh, isn't it nice that the warm weather has held on so long into November? )
A great post which made me smile! Compared to my work colleagues my neighbourhood on the other hand is great. We have lived there for just over two months and have met wonderful people. Small talk is almost not needed anymore as it starts to go into meaningful discussions! I love it!

Re: How was your weekend?

Might be something in how you form the question. It seems it's acceptable in the UK/US to ask directly - "How was your weekend?" Here you might have to volunteer the info first, i.e. "Wasn't the weather great at the weekend? We took full advantage and went up the Rigi with the family." That normally shakes some kind of response loose from colleagues.

Having to adapt the way you interact with a different nation/culture doesn't mean they are socially inept. However, expecting that you can wade in interrogating people over their leisure time in the same way you do "back home" could, quite understandably, shift the blame of being socially inept to the "asker", couldn't it?

Hmm, now I think of it the back stabbing thing has some truth in it. Thank you for pointing this out!

I didn't mean to say my colleagues are socially inept as they do talk about their leisure time in one on one situations just not in groups. But I might have got an answer to the 'group situation' above. Will observe it in the days to come .

Re: How was your weekend?

My week started fine but finished not so greatly. My grandma died at a venerable age of 96 years old on Thursday and it set the mood for the weekend. I started to paint my son's bedroom on Saturday. We went to have dinner in a Japanese restaurant and enjoy a All You Can Eat fresh made sushis for 15 euros each. And continued the painting on Sunday but couldn't finish it because I didn't have enough tape...

I am sorry to hear about your grandma. I see you live in Spain. I hope you can be close to your family.

Re: How was your weekend?

I prayed for all the wayward EF souls at the Einsiedeln church. It took about 3 hours and 45 minutes, all the while getting cramps in my knees and being stared at by tourists, who were gawking at the walls and parishioners. But the worst came as I left the church to head back to the train station. I had to fight against the crowds who were greedily devouring cinnamon donuts and Schafböcke and guzzling Glühwein and Cafe Schnapps. Between the dogs, children, drunks, manic Christmas market shoppers and cranky people in general, I managed to reach my destination 2 hours and 14 minutes later with only minor bruises and scratches.

It was a mad Sunday.

Re: How was your weekend?

Heh heh i know the feeling. I was in Oxford street in London (not by choice) and there were so many people we got stuck on the pavement not being able to move. It felt more like a concert not a shopping street. First and last time there

Re: How was your weekend?

I had a fantastic weekend!

The band I play with (Regional Brass Band Bern) won the 1st section at the Swiss Brass Band Championships in Montreux on Saturday. A very proud moment in my banding life!

How that trophy got back to Bern in one piece I don't know...

Schwiizer Meischter 2011!!
