Is this a Scam?

Following the thread about the old lady who got cheated on I was wondering if the following is a scam too and if anybody else on the forum has been contacted in a similar way:

On Thursday I received a phone call with the caller id visible, but the number unknown to me. Against my usual habit (they could always leave a message in the am if it was important) I picked up the phone. The man on the other end asked if I was Mrs.so-and-so and I said yes. Then he told me he had found our number in the phone directory because he was specifically looking for US nationals in the Zug area who would be willing to come to a garage in Cham to test a new device they wanted to lance in the US market that is something new in a Porsche Cayenne. It would take us about 60-90 minutes and we would get 150 francs for it. Me being an absolute car freak I said we might be interested. Then he asked me what kind of car do I drive and what kind of car MG's sil and if we had i-phones. At this point I said, listen, I'll discuss it with my husband and can we call you back? And he gave me his phone number and said there was also a Mr. so-and-so who would speak English and we should ask for him.

Has this happened to anyone else and is this a scam or for real?

Probably not legit, but if it is... 100 CHF/hour sound lucrative to fill out a questionnaire.

They said what garage and I know it exists, but to check the number is a good idea *slapsherhead*

Sorry for the hassle, but I got fed up breaking into cars looking for iPhones, just to find that the owners didn't have one.

No he asked if we were, he was looking for English-sounding names, and since MG's sil is, I said yes.

Call the garage on Monday and ask them if the offer is legit. If yes, then have fun. If not, the garage will be grateful to know that their name is involved in a scam and may even contact the police.

The offer sounds rather strange to me, especially since the garage probably has its own list of customers they could contact.

If you're really going through with this I'd say to them cash only, up front (no credit towards a purchase because there's probably a sales pitch coming) and the option to walk at any time (no money back).

Still rather odd. Call the garage on Monday.

PS: Olygirl's super powers was able to locate calltec's number in the search.ch function so the company is most probably legitimate.

Maybe they are doing Market Research to find out how many of the people they try this on post on English Forum.

That is a very good idea and I'll do that and if it's real then I'll call the other guy back and tell him we'll do it.

MG's sil, being the typical paranoid American, got all upset when I told him about it and said they were probably secret agents from the tax authority LOL

Ah, I've got it. It's the Billag. You can watch TV on an iPhone you know.

Hmm, well, difficult to say, but I reckon it's probably a scam - some kind of an incentive to get you into the car dealership where they will offer you something - phoney goodies, sell you a car, an overpriced gadget for your car. Who knows. I personally wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, but can't really figure out from what you said what the actual scam is.

Re: Is this a Scam?

I get calls from 'Microsoft' people all the bloody time... It's allways poor english and some strange overseas number, so the get a thick Bärner Dialächt for there time. Ask the Garage if it's Legit, it doesn't make sense to me, that a garage would 'invent' something for Porsche Cayenne on they're own accord. but still..... next time answer any telemarketing questions with nodescript questions. like "damm that's a good question, maybe if..."
Cheers

Re: Is this a Scam?

Sounds very strange to me, as it seems, that they're trying to determine when somebody's not going to be home etc. Also, it is highly unlikely, that a business is offering a monetary reward for trying out their product. I'd be alerted...maybe you should even contact the police, to see whether they were similar odd phone calls followed by breakins.

Re: Is this a Scam?

If it were me I would go for it. I made around £500 in Amazon vouchers last year doing surveys and telephone interviews for a US company doing market research in the life sciences field. I was sceptical at first when they said I would receive the voucher 3-6 weeks later, but as the first survey was a 10-15 minute online questionnaire I went for it. The voucher showed up when they said it would. The largest single amount I got was about £80 for a half hour phone interview.

If I am reading what the OP wrote correctly it's not the garage that invented it. It seems to me like someone invented or developed it and will be doing product testing at that particular garage. In which case the garage would definitely know about it. It could be that it's a product to integrate an iphone into a car's existing entertainment and communications system. Hence the questions about iphone ownership.

But only the OP can decide if she feels comfortable doing this. Maybe I'm gullible but I don't see the scam angle. Not yet.

If this does turn out to be genuine, tell them you know a website where there's lots of locals with American-sounding surnames...

...and you can refer them at the very reasonable rate of 50CHF per head.

25 CHF each sound ok to you? ;)

No not the garage invented it but they are the Porsche dealers where you can try it or whatever it is they want us to do.
