With the lack of cheap accomodation in Zürich that might be a shrewd move.

I did hear that for some crimes you are actually allowed to work during the day and then return to prison at night. Maybe you can find out which crime best suits your needs.

I was thinking of making off with a large consignment of chocolate (cremetta) or perhaps some low fat paprika crisps!

Re: In the Clink

They are offering me 24 days in lieu of a CHF2400 fine for speeding. I have been wondering myself. Statistics say that they are full of non Swissies! I will probably end up paying the fine!!

I think it does - you are convicted anyhow, it's the sentence that's different.

If I may, most of them are not really the kind of non-Swissies you'd like to meet....

I am being told our local jail in Geneva is far from a five star hotel, since the number of inmates is almost 3x the design number. So probably you are going to have to share that Playstation...

Re: In the Clink

alternatively, you can pop across the border into Austria, get up to mischief there & head off to thei 5 * prison

combining a holiday in a top rated venue with keeping your card clean in Switzerland, whilst satisfying your desire to go to pokey...

(also read the comments at the foot, some of these guys should be in EF)

Re: In the Clink

that is amazing, i wonder how the rehabilitation rates compare to other similar countries? that is a much better idea then throwing kids who made extraordinarily silly mistakes into a cage; this just breeds contempt where there was only ignorance before.

on a lighter note, it looks a darn sight better then some of places i have stayed in.

If it bothers you that many appartments have only three regular moving dates per year, keep in mind that with the new Swiss penal law, prison sentences under six months are a rarity now (smaller offenses are now punished with fines).

About half of the cantons allow work outside prison under certain circumstances when more than half of the penalty time has passed.

According to this article (German) the capacity of Swiss prisons is mostly in use with a high average of 93%. Four out of five inmates are foreign.

Champ-Dollon is the tip of the iceberg, running at outrageous 180% of its intended capacity. Regrettably it has been like this for eight years now because of incompetent politicians and a different mentality of judges in Geneva (more inmates in remand).

Hi Telandy

Are you sure thats correct? Normally they say that doing the days in Jail does not exempt you from paying the fine. At least this is what was said on a tram fine i'd seen before. Would be harsh to do 24 days in jail and come home to a 2400 fine

You can study for a degree while in prison. I know of a case where a prisoner studied for a degree with assistance from a local university, including regular visits from a professor, and he duly obtained a degree.

Re: In the Clink

There was that chap who spent his time studying for a doctorate in neuroscience, who then successfully used his knowledge at an appeals court to show he couldn't have caused the brain injury to the person that got him in prison in the first place.
