Im now worried that the monkey nuts might be covered by some confidentially agreement.

ok, they allegedly gave me a cheapo bag of monkey nuts.
I counted my monkey nuts and there are 10% less than last year.

I'm going on strike.

Re: Salary increase 2012

Forgot to add one more thing...

While I'll get an increase, I also get more costs. The company in all its wisdom decided to not send paper payslips anymore. Only digital. Printing on company printers is not allowed. So I'll also have some "inflation" in costs at home to spend time and resources on printing a copy of my payslip every month. Yep, that's real productivity (and while I'm digital on most things, payslips I like on paper).

Sorry for sidetracking, back on topic

Re: Salary increase 2012

A cost of living increase of 1% is not a "raise". A "raise" if performance related where a CoL increase is indexed to inflation and, yes, those you you get just for turning up to work.

So if I wrote that I received a 7% cost of living increase this year, would that make you feel any better?

If I had to receive a pay cut this year, to help my company survive, would you feel superior?

I find this sort of post, distasteful, unnecessary and harmful. As I have already said, it breaches confidence, and suggests to me a continuing moral decline.
Wow. Over react much? What confidence are being breached? If you don't want to talk about your salary no one is obliging you. It has never been written in any of my work contracts nor those of my husband that we can't tell anyone our salary. Many people don't do it because that is the custom, not because they are not allowed.

If find the topic of COL increases interesting if only to know that the Swiss economy is quite stable with very little inflation. I know no ones cares, but in Argentina were the official (BS) rate of inflation is 8 (or something)%, people are now getting 30% cost of living increases. Yes, cost of living increases not performance related increases. That tells you something about the economy here. CH=stable, AR=Not so much.

Re: Salary increase 2012

Not sure I agree. A raise is an increase - period. And it can be given for:
- merit
- cost of living adjustment
- market adjustment
- a combination of the above

Its a shame that attacks and jealousy are so prevalent
What attacks and jealousy? The OP asked a question and got several answers, the most prevailing opinion being "Yes, you're doing great, stop worrying".

If anyone is hoping for sympathy for "only" receiving a raise of 1% on a bloody enormous salary, when many - perhaps even most - members of this forum earn nowhere near as much and are unlikely to receive any kind of "cost of living" pay rise, then he is likely to be disappointed.

The OP is minting it and still complaining. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's naive to think that he isn't going to get a few comments on it.

i was on a plane to the US last week and the woman next to me asked what i did (after some other chit chat) she then proceeded to ask me how much i made. i said im not really sure, so she proceeded to guess and really pressed me on the figures despite my obvious squirming.

i think its an american thing...

she was trying to know if you're worth chatting for the next 7-9 hours flight.

There is an unpleasant "Four Yorkshiremen" type edge to all of these money threads though - more inverted snobbery, less tolerance, less ability to tell the truth than in any other area of discussion. It doesn't happen in threads on religion, politics etc.

Dunno. I thought it was a Swiss thing... Some of my Swiss friends are continually surprising me with questions like this plus others on how much I work etc. But then again some Hungarian family members (mostly from rural areas and with a well wishing attitude) drive me nuts with the same stupid thing... Aaaaaarg!

(I usually return the favor by telling them that I earn at least half of what the Swiss generally do for working a couple hours each day. That shuts 'em up! )

also happens in hong kong. i woman started talking to me. her first question was: "how old are you", then "what do you do for a living?" then "how much do you earn".

anyway. thinking again. on the one hand, you can be happy that you still have a job.

but i guess on the other hand, if you have a pay cut in real terms, i guess you could be justified in being annoyed by this.

I like contradicting posts.

And yours made me think a second and realize that yes it's not really intelligent to "just say" without thinking why...

I though it was some kind of "evaluation" on how other workers have been impacted by the crisis in Switzerland...

But about confidence I don't understand....? Self confidence or confidential agreement?
Because I doubt none of them should be impacted by the "raise".
Employees have been successfully privately prosecuted because they disclosed the terms of their contracts to fellow employees. Many contracts have a clause prohibiting disclosure, but this is irrelevant. If the company want to encourage employees to believe they are being well rewarded, when they aren't, they can instil this fear of disclosure.

I thought I had explained; but maybe not well enough; telling your fellow worker what you are earning is only safe when you earn the same. Otherwise one is going to be deeply unsatisfied, jealous, and dislike the better off: the richer one will be smug and despise the poorer as being inept and worthless.

It brings unnecessary strife, and doesn't help either one. You get paid the amount you can negotiate. Salesmen are not better people just because they earn more than teachers and nurses. They earn more because they can negotiate better, and are ruthless enough to leave if they feel unrewarded.

I should get 2% more salary (starting in april, bur the date is not 100% , could be moved to a later date if the company decides that there is not enough money)

My company is following the lead of certain restaurants and Coldplay.

Each month they will pay me what they think I was worth that month.

I'm expecting good things.
