so the lifestyle hubby and I have on less than a quarter of Karl's earnings (we can go to the movies once or twice a month) seems "comfortable" to me.
Oh. We know about the 120K upper ceiling, but have we already agreed on what the allowed EF lower salary ceiling should be?

Here you go (all in German though, sorry.)

The median is CHF 5777/month pre-tax (so just under 70K/year), 10th percentile is 3823/month (=45K/year) and 90th percentile is 10513/month (= 126K/year - a little higher than I remembered it - so maybe the OP's only in the top 12% after all.)

Re: Salary increase 2012

one should factor in for how long have you been making the salary you are making to find if somebody can be considered as rich or not. for many jobs that require advanced training, the salaries can be high but you start making them in your late 20s or early 30s. just paying off the debt can take many years to break even

You might not be off to Thailand every year, and the kids might have to ride (gasp!) secondhand bikes to public school, but nobody will be going to bed hungry either.
I wouldn't even be so sure about that.

There's a family in my building: he is a taxi driver and she is a cleaner. They have three kids and they appear to be holidaying in exotic locations quite a bit. I guess they must be living frugally the rest of the year. But it's all about personal choices and priorities.

You sure about that... based on what they earn here I'm surprised how "poor" taxi drivers claim to be...

Yeah, but look at what they drive. Where else does a cabbie show up in a brand spankin' new Mercedes?

Re: Salary increase 2012

I return to my argument, that revealing your salary or increase of salary, may result in your instant dismissal:

http://www.verkaufschweiz-basel.ch/A...Entlassung.pdf
Translation
Other reasons that justify an immediate dismissal without prior warning, are serious violations of fiduciary duty as the unapproved competition with the employer during or outside working hours or the betrayal of company secrets.

Translation
The employee must be kept secret facts, such as in particular manufacturing and business secrets of which he acquired in the service of the employer's knowledge, during the employment relationship not exploit or release, even after its termination, he remains committed to secrecy, so far as to safeguard the legitimate interests of the employer is required.

Have read through the many responses both good and bad, polite and impolite. However, being unemployed is far worse. One doesn't get any increase there, and polite requests to the office in Geneva to check on the pension payments have brought 3 x zilch.

Chatting about one's salary isn't exactly industrial espionage.

You might be right. Some companies might well sack you, but it'd be part of their right to sack anyone on a whim rather than anything contractual.

Thanks for returning to it. Its still absolute cobblers. Nothing in what you wrote supports your position. Your salary isn't a "business secret" - your landlord knows it, your bank knows it, your partner knows it etc etc.

Appreciate your persistence more than your accuracy though

What if the salary was 120,000.99? Would that be really rich?

If you're going to be the sarcastic one, at least go for 120,000.01 and make a proper job of it

Just noticed on my company's holiday form that we have 2091 work hours in 2012 as opposed to last year's 2116. That doubles a 1% payrise!
