Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

My wife and I searched many apartments and the key was to find one with a washer and dryer in the apartment. We found it and it is well worth the nit extra we pay to be able to do laundry whenever we want.

Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

I was happily washing away in our schedule-free laundry room, until last week.

The lock was changed, and it was posted that we must now go to the main office (open a couple hours per day) to borrow the key for the room. Of course I asked for it, and one wasn't available. They said they would leave a note to leave the key in my mailbox when it was free.

The build has a few hundred people living there, I don't think the keys will come back too quickly. Not very amused!

Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

We have inside washing machine and tumbler inside the Apartment.. So it's quite easy., else I think even if it is not there then even buying it may not be a bad idea if you are going to stay in Swiss for good number of. Years....

I doubt that you will be able to stay in there for that long. Their longest flight is maybe 12 hours or so and they will make you leave the plane after landing!

Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

I just Googled "Waschsalon" and it came up with this, among a couple of other possibilities.

You could give them a call and see if they can help you out.

Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

My advice for what its worth is:

1. Read your contract to see what is actually written within the contract and what falls under house rules.
2. Raise the question/issue with the owner/management company
3. gain support from other residence who feel the same way.
4. Make a proposal of how the schedule could look and submit
5. Engage mieterverband for legal help, support and resolution
6. Buy and install a washing machine in your apartment (this is very easy to do especially connected to a bath)
7. Rent one from a company like Fust - they will install it for you, charge you upwards of 40 francs a month and you only need to give two months notice and there is no minimum rental duration.

Honestly, solution 6 & 7 put the control in your hands

Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

Cheeky buggers! I handwashed everything for two years when I lived in Greece - bedsheets, jeans, everything.

The women of the village used to stand below my flat as I hung my clothes up to dry on the roof, gossiping about the strange Englishman who did his own washing. It merely confirmed their suspicions that all Englishmen are gay.

I blame Lord Byron.

Good advice, although often as not your rental contract will include some phrase like "agrees to abide by the house rules"! So the distinction isn't always as useful as one might wish.

Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

There should be a system here where you can see the laundry schedule and address of all EFers, so you can pop over and use someone else's laundry room when desperate.

The trade-off being that the "guest" washer has to do the "host" washer's washing.

Yeah, I think that could work...

I checked with my lawyer: bringing own wash-machine in rented apartment is perfectly OK.
Depends very much on your contract. Most of the time in CH, especially in older apartments, it is defo NOT allowed, due to vibration, noise and possibility of flooding etc.

Thanks for the logical checklist--I appreciate it!

1. Contract doesn't specify anything other than they are there to use and coin operated.
2. I will bring it forward, unfortunately the office workers only speak german, and my high german isn't confidently confrontational, so I have to plan what to say.
3. Yeah I'm kinda shy and don't talk to strangers--they all talk high-german, and I'm not comfortable in high german--plus most of them have a secondary home and are there just temporary for a few weeks/months.
4. As for the plan--I think they would have been better off just installing a surveillance camera (whether it even records or not) since the issue was people breaking into the coin boxes and stealing the bounty of 20 rps. Either way, I doubt they will listen to me
5. Mieterverband might be a step if I get too irritated and can't find another place to move to
6-7. Definitely no room for a washing machine or attachments (my PC alone has been know to knock out the breakers)

Essentially there's not much I can do (or want to go through the effort to do) but looks like I'll have to czech out the landromats. Essentially this was just a frustration rant :P

Thanks again for the input

Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

It always amazes me the amount written about laundry in Switzelrand; it's so easy, just do what you would do back in UK/US................ buy a washing machine !

They are easy to plumb in the bathroom or kitchen, fine many gerances say you can't have them, but who abides by all the rules anyway and who's going to tell them anyway !

If they flood you might find yourself in the insurance company's version of no-man's land with a big fat bill to pay to clear up and repair any water damage.

Always best to check.

Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

Just some remarks about "laundry in Switzerland"
> laundry is NOT a federal affair
> laundry is NOT even a Cantonal affair
> laundry is NOT even a municipal affair
> laundry is a matter of the house owners/adminstration AND
> laundry is a matter of the people in a house
> AND of YOU
