Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

I'm new here but saw the earlier posts and can't agree more. Does anyone here know of a place in Zurich where I can go do laundry, a laundromat? I have my own wash machine that is broken, have 3 loads that need to be done and the Electrolux prople just called to say they expect my replacement parts to arrive on May 8th! Also, if anyone knows what the word for laundromat is in German please let me know so I can do a search.
Thanks for any help
Liz

Laundromat = der Waschsalon.

Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

Do you have a kitchen sink?

I managed the better part of two years in rural Greece with nothing better than hot water, a bucket, soap flakes and red raw hands.

Mind, the local old dears all thought I was crazy because I didn't have a convenient wife, mother, sister or maid to do the job for me. They used to gather in the street below my roof and make disapproving comments to each other.

Oh, and all my t-shirts ended up with little holes in them.

But apart from that, it was ok...

Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

Today is my laundry day. When I entered the doorway I intentionally visited laundry room to check if it is free, then I've dropped by at the apartment, picked up my laundry and went down. Chinese woman, my neighbor who I greeted on my way up has just loaded her laundry in the machine and started washing. She doesn't speak English, I don't speak German! Why are some people so nasty!!! :E

Question: I am about to start my laundry only now. Until when can I wash without disturbing the senses of my other neighbors?

My sympathies! Normal "Nachtruhe" often is 22:00, in our laundry room washing is allowed until 21:00. Maybe it's mentioned on the poster or pinboard with the laundry schedule?

Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

Thanks, will check these papers on a door now... Hope it is 22:00 as I have to load the machine two times.

Does anyone know a laundry service near http://map.search.ch/?x=24571m&y=61363m&z=512 ? I can't stand this bi-weekly schedule anymore!

I think I'm pretty lucky in my apartment building, There are only five or six residential flats, the rest of the building contains offices. Even so, I still book my time in, always the same day same times, everyone else does the same so we each have a day to ourselves, plus some times here and there where you can nip down and see if it's free.

One thing that bugs me is we're still not allowed to do washing on Sunday, even though the washroom is 2 floors underground and the residential flats are on the third floor. It can't be the noise, and no-one can see the the laundry hanging out to dry, wtf?
so just wash on sunday....wtf? THese conservative people have to change their ways. |We live in the 21st century hey.

sorry to hear about that. Are you sure it's Chinese or Asian? Might be they don't know about the rule of laundry (we all know Switzerland is very unique in this). could you write a note and put it into her mail box? If it's not working, PM me and I could write a Chinese note for you and you print it out and put into her mail box....

We live in the 21st century in Switzerland. This is the Swiss way of life. They don't have to change their ways just because foreigners like us find it inconvenient. The fantastic thing about Swiss democracy is that if 100k Swiss citizens really need to wash on Sunday then they can force a national referendum on the topic.

Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

When I used to live in Zürich area there were notorious problems with allocated time of doing the laundry. Especially when I used to travel towards Baden from Stettbach station. Always you had to book the place in advance and make sure that some moron didn't show up few minutes just before your deadline and messed up the sequence in the queue...

Since I moved to the new apartment in Neuenhof (where I stay just behind the railway) then the notorious noise of the train sort of like camouflages the humming of the washing machine and it is more forgiving to my neighbours on Sundays. Advantagous is also the fact that I have got the wahing machine/dryer inside the flat in the kitchen.

Funilly enough when I signed the contract via relocation agent I modestly asked just to move the washing machine from the bathroom, where it blocked the shower place incredibly badly... Guess what, just few months down the line I have received the bill for over CHF650 which claims the cost of labour and hardship of installing such. I straight a way forwarded it to the relocation agent saying boldly that it is not on and such cost shall be incurred by owner as part of the contract agreement. Needless to say, the latter one was in German and I am not sure if such improvement is not binding the tenant to pay instead of the landlord?

Where I come from, any such rework is usually done by the landlord prior the tenant moves in. Maybe here it is different?

No THEY do not have to change their ways, but they should live and let live. The 21st century includes people that have to work 100% plus during the week. I damm well am not going to let my entire Saturday be cleaning, shopping and washing. Sunday is the Puuuurrrfect day for washing. Accept it Herr und Frau Schweizer.

I would just go ahead and try. Chances are that nobody cares. In our building where every apartment has its own washer and dryer, you're technically not allowed to wash after 10pm or on Sundays, but it seems that nobody follows that rule. We've haven't had any complaints in eight years (touching wood) and I've noticed countless times that others are washing at night and on Sundays as well.

As a general rule, it seems to be preferable to live in a building with many foreigners and younger people. Much less trouble.

Thanks for suggesting your help, but it is all right now, the son of the Chinese lady knew English and I asked him to ask me next time if they have a need to wash in my day. I have nothing against this I just don't like when it is unpredictable

Re: Laundry in switzerland sucks

Where we live, you have to right your name down on a rota, last week i was washing on my normal day friday, when suddenly my doorbell rang, and 1 of my neighbours is standing there, and tells me i have to stop washing, because she had written her name down from 5pm on wards
So i went downstairs to check, and she had written it down, but after i had wrote my name down, but i had no proof, so i said ok when my wash is finshed you can have the washing maschine, but i need to use the tumbler so when my wash had finished i put my wash in the tumble dryer, then when i went to get my wash she had started her wash with my wash badge, the problem is now if i pull my badge out it will stop the maschine, and she would have to restart with her wash badge, not to be horrible i left my badge in for her to wash, then i waited until i guessed the time would be for her wash to have finished, went downstairs, and she had started another wash with my badge, so i went upstairs to talk to her, and she would not open the door. The end result, i ended up paying for her wash the whole night, and i found my wash badge in the morning in front of my door.

That's really cheeky!! I would have just pulled the badge out and let the machine stop and her washing sit there in the mucky water (but I'm probably not as nice as you ).

I don't think it does any harm to the machine or at least the cycle if you do this because I pulled our key (same as a badge thingy, I guess) by mistake but the cycle carried on from where it stopped as soon as I put it back in.

Someone pulled a badge on another neighbour (they hated each other, and did it on purpose), and when she put it back in she had to re-programme her cycle from the beginning, which costs time, and money.
