Absolutely. I really thought the second floor was going to collapse on us as I felt first the foundation shift then the floor above us sounded like they dropped something very heavy and I swear I saw the roof of our apt. move. This was in Thalwil.
Having lived through both the S.F quake in 89 and the L.A quake in 94 when I lived not too far from the San Andreas I can tell you that the big ones start off with a small rumble that may rattle your windows for about 10-15 seconds then it shifts gears and is more intense as stuff starts to fall down or collapse. You have less than 30sec. to get out (every quake is different but this *should* save you)
The other night I was sitting on my sofa working on my laptop before I knew it I was standing in flight mode ready to go. Right as I turned to my sons room it stopped, but you need this cat like reflex to survive, if you stop to ponder "what the hell is going on" its too late.
My wife is Swiss (from Brig, a red zone) and has never had an earthquake drill .
And THIS of course is the problem
> NOBODY here has ever had or heard about "earthquake drill"
> EVERYBODY would "ponder" around for at least 5 minutes
> the various "services" have no scheme or instructions for such a thing
> exactly the downtowns here are in no way prepared for quakes of size
> a small number of modern bridges and tunnels may be "quake-proof" but the majority of the ten-thousands of bridges and tunnels are not

What I dont understand is Wallis sits on the same fault line that devestated Italy a few years ago. The Walliser attitude is "yeah it may happen one year but never in my memory so why should we do anything about it"
In a land where preparedness is a value they fail with epic porportions on this one.
